***** factory ammo for .30-06?

Postby FJ540 on Wed Sep 14, 2011 2:30 am

I know this is going to sound drawkcab ssa, but is there such a thing as a reduced recoil .30-06 factory round?

Ya know the rifle I bought my buddy? Yeah, he's crying about his shoulder hurts when he shoots it. Waaaaaa  He's 20# over me and built like a farm kid. I'm not sure exactly what ammo he got, but I'm pretty sure it's federal's cheapest offering. No clue what the bullet weight is either as I haven't seen the gun since I delivered it.

He's so humbled by the experience, he said it's not fun to shoot and wants an AR instead. :( He shouldn't be hunting deer with an AR IMO. But at any rate, right now he's only committed to keeping the savage till the end of rifle season and then intends to return it to me (which was the deal - he can't sell it). I'm hoping I can find a de-tuned load for him till we can work up some slow pushers like my retumbo-06 for the cooper.

Yes, and I have 2 boxes in the closet still -- problem is that its apparently not commercially available anymore (my bad). Federal looks to have dumped all their low recoil line.

Remington makes a similar load that I've shot also: http://is.gd/2ERn4i -- and this appears to be available. Both loads aren't much good beyond 150-200 yds -- but up to 100 its nearly indistinguishable from full power. YMMV.

ETA: I went back to full power so I could shoot more.

Frick - my 80lb 12 year old put 20 rds of 30-06 through his new gun 2 weeks ago and had a great time.

Have him get one of these and try again:

Reduced power is a 130 grain bullet which just looses too much energy took fast for long shots. It does work well for short distances.

Three options. I have a low power -06 load in my book at home I can send you.

Buy the low recoil stuff

Post the rifle for sale and run to goose hill and buy one of the rem 700 packages they have in 7-08 for him( that would be a better choice for kiddo, too) and if buddy has issues with recoil from that, well I am sure Mrs Tim has a tutu and a tiara he can borrow.

I am also not a huge fan of 30-06 either - beats the heck out of me, and does not do that well for my shoulder either. I went to a 270 shooting 130gr bullets.... That seems to solve the issue for me and I absolutely defy you to distinguish the terminal effects - dead is dead.

That was the intent from the start - he doesn't have any reloading gear and I don't have .30-06 dies or brass. The plan was that he'd get some boxes of factory through it, then buy the dies, bullets, powder, and come down to my place and I'd get him going on rolling his own. But as we all know, a plan is only good till the first encounter...

What I'll likely do is use that gun for capital conversion (sale or trade) for a .30-30 lever so kiddo and the odd-paw Mrs can shoot the same beast (and I want one). The .30-06 doesn't add anything to my stable that isn't already more than fulfilled with my .308 and .25-06.

Thanks for the insights, this is what you can't get with google, Paul. ;)

I won't have the savage back for two months.

Maybe he'll finally kill a deer and want to keep it.
