45 auto brass?

Postby JeffD on Tue Sep 20, 2011 12:55 pm

So I am kinda new to reloading. I am sorting my brass and noticed that Federal has 2 different size primers. Am I seeing this right? Do they make some that don't use large pistol primers. I first noticed this when I realized that my primers don't fit in them. Then as I sorted the rest of my brass I could see the difference in the two. Are these brass junk or should I save them and get another set up for them.

Thanks,
Jeff

Yes. Federal is using spp instead of lpp with some of its .45 ACP.

Some will tell you that it is fixing a century old mistake, which is why you might se much more of this in the future.......

I will tell you that it makes for a pain in the ass when sorting brass.

The stuff I run into most often with spp is stamped FEDERAL NT, which apparently designates them as a "non-toxic" round........

I'd bet there is a simple way to reload them using spp instead of lpp, but I don't know of any pressure differences that might occur, and don't really care to expend the energy on it, so I just toss them into my recycle bucket.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

SPP and LPP are interchangable when reloading .45ACP.

Good to know!

I guess I'm still far too lazy to do anything with the spp .45 brass other than pitch it. Until it's a standard anyways......

what I've been doing with my recycle brass is getting it to Th3180 for him to donate to the Ronald McDonald House.

it's too much of a hassle for me to mess with given the small handfulls i find - it goes in my recylce bucket as well.

Blazer also has small pistol primer brass.

I've got a coffee can full. When reloading components become scarce again, I'll use these.

BTW -- NT on Federal (and I think WIN as well) stands for non-toxic primer -- there's no lead in the NT formulations unlike standard primers.

Unfortunately, NT on brass also means a SIGNIFICANTLY LARGER PRIMER HOLE!! Now, will that larger primer hole change the ignition characteristics of a reloaded round using non-NT primers?? Would anybody here care to bet their life on that?? I choose not to take the chance, particularly since I come across so few NT cases...

Thanks for the help. I guess I will keep them in a bucket for now. I have a couple hundred rounds so far. I think my buddy buys a lot of this stuff. So all I would have to do is get some spp and load these that same?

While we're talking about primers, another question. I have some S&B brass with some red stuff on the primers. They seem to press out hard and the new primers don't want to go in. I have another bucket of those. I guess this is all part of learning to reload. I have kept all my brass since I got my Kimber and I think I was shopping for the cheapest stuff for a while. Now I know to but the same factory loads if possible to keep this simple.

The red stuff is primer sealent to make them water tight. If they are a beyoch to push out, then they are probably staked. Is there a ring around the primer? If so you need to buy a primer pocket swager to open up the primer pocket.

For what it's worth, the 45 ACP cartridges I load using "WIN NT" brass with the small primer pockets chrono to within 10 fps of those rounds assembled with the large primer pocket brass, when shot out of my CZ 97B.

I looked for the crimp ring and I didn't see one. I will check them all and see. Maybe some of them are not crimped? I just pressed a couple out and them seemed easier.

I checked all my loads and don't see any NT brass. Are these common? Should I be paying more attention? :o
