Federal Guard Dog Review

Here is an interesting and thorough review of the expanding full metal jacket ammunition "guard Dog" by Federal

I thought that the jacket separation was interesting.

Deeper penetration going thru 2 layers of drywall first :?

Yeah something smells fishy on those tests. Drywall certainly won't speed up a bullet. I'd like to see him repeat the tests a few more times.

Since he only did one shot of each, I have a feeling that statistical variance was at play here. Maybe shooting 10 shots through the drywall or just the gel would have shown a penetration that was plus minus 2 or more inches on each.

The only other explanation (hold on to your hats here), is that the drywall caused an expansion that was not as great as the one due to gel only, therefore allowing a bullet with a more aerodynamic cross section to go through the gel further.

The reason it didn't further expand in the gel after hitting drywall could be due to effects of viscoelasticity and packing issues...this is kind of like work hardening, etc. When you deform something from the beginning, for some materials you have to do it all in one shot to keep the momentum of the plasticization going to reach full deformation. If you stop half way through, you will need MUCH more energy to start the deformation again. Essentially the drywall half ass deformed the bullet, and the gel couldn't finish the deformation job, especially at reduced velocity.

All theory of course, but then again, so is everything else... :)

I tried EFMJ in 9mm a few years ago and they only expanded about 50% of the time in wet pack.
Dont know if they are different then Guard Dog as the bullet looked more copper colored.

It's the exact same bullet as far as I can tell, same published specs and everything. They just fancied it up, put it in 20 round boxes, and marketed it towards us dummies.

Actually, I think they did update the design a bit, as the original EFMJ had what appeared to be a wad of salt water taffy in the nose of the bullet, so it would reliably expand through thick clothing because there was no hollowpoint to clog up. Sadly, they never allowed those bullets to be sold seperately, which means us handloaders had to pass the ammo by or bend over when we got to the cash register. The new design appears to have a different kind of taffy in it, and the jacket is scored 6 ways instead of four.

I have gravitated to the Corbon line even though they don't sell their bullets alone either, because they and DoubleTap are the two companies who load their ammo very hot. One of the nice people at Corbon actually told me that they get in a whole lot of bulk powder (several tons at least) and work up a load based on the SAMMI pressure limit with their pressure barrels, and then run the entire lot of powder out.

On my 10mm's I carry CorBon PowerBalls, which I think are a slightly more elegant way of having a ball round that will expand. You take a soft lead core, swage it around a polymer ball at the tip, and then put a copper jacket around it. Result? A true "ball" round with a slippery plastic nose that will aid feeding, and when it hits something the ball is forced back into the lead, making the bullet expand, and once it starts to do that the extruded lead edges will "catch" on whatever it's going through and open up completely.

The 105gr 9mm EFMJ that I have from 2002 is marked with a muzzle vel of 1230fps and the rubber compound in the tip almost looks like cured clear silicon caulk and is score in a six pedal design.
