Federal HST 135GR - .40S&W

Postby yang on Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:34 pm

Anyone have exp with this ammo? It also says "Low Recoil" on it. Saw it at Walmart.

Just thought it was weird being that the GR was soo low for a .40S&W. I'm still a noob but this is the first I've seen this.

Someone please educate be.

Thanks!

I have shot a few hundred rounds of this ammo, and have about two hundred more in the ammo locker. It is a light recoil round with its light weight bullet at less than max powder loading. This runs around 1150fps and could be loaded up to at least 1250 at standard pressures.

The round was developed for the federal government for low recoil, but was dropped for less than stellar performance when compared to heavier rounds. Penetration suffers from the low weight, and driving it faster doesn’t help. The extreme expansions at higher speeds cause even less penetration than the current round.

I’m a firm believer in Federal HST bullets, but in heavy per caliber weights. Check out tnoutdoors9 on U-tube for many HST tests, including the 135 and 180gr rounds in .40. The 135 is nice to shoot, but I would not bet my life on it. Go heavy to get penetration.
