Firing a loose bullet

Postby Ironsight87 on Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:46 am

I once had a 30-06 cartridge where the bullet had somehow gotten jammed in past the crimp and could wiggle around. I couldn't pull it out with my fingers, but I later yanked it with a pliers and dismantled it.

My question is, what could have happened if I fired it?

seating below the crimp = smaller case capacity = higher pressure when fired = a lot of bad things possible

don't do it. none good. run away :|

Don't know and don't care to find out. Ammo is cheap compared to medical bills. Throw it out, take it apart, anything but fire it.

Funny, when I decided not to fire it, I was worrying about my gun and not myself. Is this normal?

the REAL question is, what kind of gun?

$2800 cooper custom = you're fine

$70 mosin = you may need some serious help.

I dont have any reloading books, but this sounds like a bad idea.

I can think of lots of possible outcomes and none of them is good.

You did the right thing.

I don't know if you are a hand loader or not. If so go and get yourself a bullet puller! Pliers are not the correct nor the safe way to remove a projectile from a case.
