.223 Brass processing

Postby Retread1911 on Tue Apr 17, 2012 7:15 pm

I am tooling up to process .223 on my 1050 and I am beginning to wonder if this is a service that is salable.

My process is

Clean
Inspect
Lube
Deprime + size to just over final size
Swage
Trim and final size
Clean the lube

Done.

You think people would pay 30$ per 1000 for this service?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

personally, I would not pay for this for the simple fact that when I reload, I like to inspect it all myself and make sure it is all sized properly. Not saying you wouldn't do it properly, but I wouldn't have piece of mind if I didn't check them. That would defeat the purpose....

It is a good idea if there are lazy reloaders...but I don't know about that.....most will want to inspect their own shells and size them themselves.

I suspect for guys like me you and any precision shooter you are right. I am tooling up because I want my stuff better and I don't want someone else's quality control to be involved.

But since I am getting ready to do it I thought I would see what kind of demand might be out there.

Only reason I don't want to load my own .223 is because of all the extra stuff you just listed. I might consider your service, do you do quantities less than 1000?

I haven't considered how I would price quantities less than 1000. Say 20$ for 500 or less.

I would have to give that some more thought

You will get back the exact brass you bring me so I think a minimum cost will be required. Smaller lots will cost me almost as my labor as 1000 count batches.

YES , I would be interested, IF I could use my Dillon Case gage, and visual criteria, to verify any or all brass is properly cleaned, sized, trimmed, and deburred. If sample lot is not acceptable, you pay for replacement of my brass.

PM SENT.

George,
Yes, for my AR brass I would be foolish to keep doing it all by hand.

Sure a sample batch is easily provided I completely understand your quality control requirements. how large a batch would you like to see?

I should have my tooling up and running in another week. I am waiting on a Tool head from Brain should be here by the end of the week.

.223 Brass processing

Postby Retread1911 on Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:55 pm

Ok engerdan and I are getting together on Sunday to work out some of the details assuming my new tool head shows up as ordered.

Since I am really just collecting data and thinking about setting up I don't have all the answers. So for now everything is face to face and local to the Burnsville Pistol Range if I even start this at all. Let's see how it goes this weekend before we get ahead of ourselves.

I am processing on a 1050 with the dillon trimmer and attempting to limit the manual steps. That means it will not be perfect brass but then again at 3 cents per round I would personally not expect perfection, if you guys know of someone that can deliver perfection at 3 cents per round let me know and I will stop tooling up my reloading room and use their service.

I cannot offer the following two things
1) stainless steal washing.
2) debur and chamfer

I appreciate all the advice. Are there any more ideas or requirements out their that I should think about?
