setback reistant pistol calibers

Postby hydraulicman on Mon Aug 13, 2012 4:58 pm

What are the calibers that resist setback the most from loading and unloading in a semi automatic pistol. I know 357 sig is out because of its reputation for set back . What about the 9mm or 40 vs 45 is one in perticular more resistant to setback than the others.

Get a Lee FCD and you should end setback issues with any caliber.

ETA: I assume you are talking about reloading. If you are talking about factory ammo, I have only ever had set back issues with multiple times chambering a round. In general I think that most straight walled pistol cases are about the same.

Why are you asking?

.22LR & .44 Colt / S&W American if you don't consider .22LR a pistol caliber.

I am talking about carry ammo and loading and unloading a pistol. What caliber or ammo type resist setback.

Regarding my handloads they are chambered once and then shot

Can setback reduced or eliminated by reloading technique? Maybe use a Lula so no pressure is put on the bullet during loading.

Think he's talking setback as in the bullet getting seated deeper into the brass case, as a result of the slide pushing from the base as the bullet rides up the feed ramp and into the chamber.

As far as which caliber/type resists the most? Good lord talk about a lot of variables to define before being able to answer a question.

To name a few: What gun are you talking about? Glock, 1911, sig p series, XD? All will have different spring rates, and different geometry, therefore will treat the same identical round differently.

Well... Could go on but you get the idea.

The only person who would know is somebody who can measure neck tension accurately. Beyond that, whatever caliber uses a heavier crimp would be your winner. But different companies are going to differ. I dont see this as an easily answered question. Wont argue itd be nice to know though. Personally i have loaded and measured HST in .45 repeatedly and seen no setback. That is a glock 21 handling the round. I still dont trust it.

I can tell you first hand that CorBon Glaser Blue Safety Slugs have setback problems in 10mm, and possibly other calibers too. The way around this is to load the mag, then drop a round in the chamber by hand, let the slide snap shut, and engage the safety or decock the gun, and finally insert the mag.

Excuse me, but I think bullet movement is STILL an issue in a lightweight 357, especially if it's Pat's Patented Plus P Plus Plus Plus Penetrator 357 handloads!! The bullet may be going in or out of the case, but it's probably not just sitting there!!

True. That's why when engnerdan looked at my .357 loads, he said, "Holy crimpage!"

(And just for the record, my loads are all from the book!)
