First reloads at the range

Rossi Rio Grande in 45-70. Reloads were 400 gr JSP, Winchester new brass, Remington 9 1/2 large primers, 44.6 grains IMR 3031 powder. Used the range at Bills Robbinsdale. Basically wanted to see how they shot and wether or not someting would blow up. Only problem was 3 light strikes. At 25 yards, had some 5 inch groups. Still trying to find find out where this thing shoots using iron sights. We are narrowing it down. Will be hitting a 200 yard range soon.

Felt good today. The reloading process worked. The light strikes were probably a procedural error. Using the 45-70 Lee Loader. Further experimentation is in order!

Wonderful feeling, isn't it?
Congrats on your first reloads! :D
Remember, gun control is not about guns, it's about control.

Are you using the Lee "Whack-a-Mole" reloading kit?? Kinda sounds like you might be, and if that's your start into reloading, then you are MAKING money (especially these days) with your kit, and in about 10 rounds, too!! For something where you'll only shoot a few dozen rounds, it's OK if a bit time consuming, and it's not like you're a USPSA shooter who needs 400 rounds of ammo a week.

Plus congratulations on getting the right SET of load data for your lever action gun, seeing as there are THREE seperate sets of 45-70 data. Last guy we had come through here had a break open single shot for the 1873 trapdoor loads running 18,000 PSI more or less, and in his first reloading attempt he loaded up some HOT Ruger #1 loads for falling block actions that are the strongest possible, and run about 45,000 PSI, and the first round kicked his ass, broke open the action of the gun, and spit the empty case back into his chest.

Guilty as charged on the "whack-a-mole". :D I am not in any hurry. I did the research before the first whack. Thanks. My first shot, I kinda cringed, waiting for hell to break loose. The next five were fun. Hell, the rest were fun. May do some hog hunting next year in Texas or UP Michigan.
