For general plinking and breaking cans and stuff, I do not think it is worth it yet. For accuracy and hunting it was a must. There are a few companies loading some good ammo now. It is expensive in a good hunting load. But generally a person does not go through a case of hunting loads.
So for developing a quality load for accuracy or game it is worthwhile. It can make your SKS fun to shoot.
I hadn't done much target shooting with my SKS's, just enough to figure out the sight picture on each. At 50 yards from the bench, open sights, 4 inch groups was good. I figured it was me and my eyes, or the stories are true about there terrible accuracy. Then I had a buddy who must put down the wrong number on an order and ended up with some Cor-Bon hunting ammo in 7.62x39. It was 150gr. but still 2300fps. Wow did that SKS come alive! Sub 2" - five shot groups. Still with the open sights at 50yds. It even had a kick. If I shoot more of that or develop a similar load I would make or buy a rubber bolt buffer or better yet make a different piston for the gas system. It felt like the bolt may have been bottoming out.
The .310 - .311 bullets are the way to go in my guns. I tried some ammo for the Ruger in my SKS and they shot terrible. They measured .308.
Have fun!
