Blue Dot Safety Notice from Alliant

Postby DeanC on Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:10 am

Alliant Powder periodically reviews and tests their published reloading data to verify that recommended recipes have not changed over time.

During the latest review Alliant Powder discovered that Alliant Powder’s Blue Dot should not be used in the following applications: Blue Dot should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile (Blue Dot recipes with heavier bullet weights as specified in Alliant Powders Reloading Guide are acceptable for use). Blue Dot should NOT be used in the 41 Magnum cartridge (all bullet weights).

Use of Blue Dot in the above cases may cause a high pressure situation that could cause property damage and serious personal injury.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Saw this notice posted down at Gunstop a while back and thought I should post it...then I forgot. Way to be on top of things, Deaner.

Blue Dot should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile

I loved using it for exactly that. Thanks a lot, Alliant! I wonder what kind of data lead to these findings.

Did you call Alliant and ask exactly why? That is not so different from a 9mm round and Blue Dot is one of the premium powders for a 124 or 125gr bullet in 9mm. I certainly have not seen any notice to worry about it with 9mm or .45 where I buy powder (I am about to load some Speer Gold Dot HP with it ... just to make sure those Great Depression raiders stay away from my home :-) ).

My understanding is that powder formulations actually change a bit over time. Thus the need for re-testing and re-evaluations.

Agreed. But why only the notice in ONE location? If I had to guess, there was a problem due to a sale or usage of cartridges loaded with Alliant Blue Dot from this particular location and that they want to avoid liability. As another poster suggested, that is his powder of choice for that particular round and I don't see why that should change. Granted, they change formulation a little from batch to batch [lot to lot], but not enough to suddenly exclude an entire profile for which they are renowned to be one of the best powders for. In short, I would get some secondary and tertiary information about this warning before I accepted it or dismissed it, especially since I have not seen any such notice at ANY other location.
