How many rounds?

Postby river_boater on Fri Mar 08, 2013 3:13 pm

A few years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to empty some of my boxed 9mm ammunition into a "fat fifty" GI ammo can. I filled the can to the top and tossed the boxes. Trouble is, I didn't keep track of how many boxes I emptied.

Approximately, how many rounds do you think are in this can? I bet someone who reloads might have a good idea.

I sat down and counted each and every round of 115 grain 9mm in each of the 10 Fat50 Ammo cans that are level full, and the average of all 10 cans if shook down as mine were was 3,896 rounds.

Now prove me wrong.

Start counting 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, keep going

That's roughly 78 50-round boxes per ammo can. Considering you have 10 of those cans, I think classifies you as a hoarder. ;)

Quiet - it's a joke, but let him keep counting to prove me wrong.
I WISH I had 10 cans full, I do have 1 Fat50 full of boxed 9mm for the Wife to shoot.

No. The real trouble is that you mixed a bunch of factory ammo together and threw away the factory boxes which means you don't have the factory lot #'s in case there is a recall.

Reloaded ammo is another story, although I do recommend labeling each batch, I have done mass loadings that end up loose in a bulk ammo box. I always keep factory ammo in its original boxes.

This can is about 1-2" shy of being full and I have about 1500 rounds of reloaded 9mm in it. I know because that's how I bought the bullets.... unless I was shorted by Berry's...

1. Weigh full can
2. Weigh empty can
3. Weigh a set amount of rounds.
4. Take full weight of can and subtract weight of empty can. Take that value and divide by weight in step 3. Multiple that value by the round count you used in step 3.
5. Profit.

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks.

Dang, I was hoping he would count it to prove me wrong!

Oh well, it is nice to have someone explain the weight-count method for everyone to use in the future.

Let us know what you get for an answer ( I know my answer is wrong.)

Have FUN shooting all that ammo.

Probably won't work out - not too many scales that heavy are very accurate. ;) Well, not ones you're likely to have in your house.
