Carry Ammo

Postby goalie on Sun Apr 14, 2013 7:13 pm

You know how when you have a metric ass-ton of components and don't have to buy anything ammo-related for a long time?

It sucks when you reach the end of your carry-ammo and realize that all you have is FMJ bullets.

I took a class with my G17 a while ago where I shot 2k rounds in 2 days. 200 rounds of "premium" 9mm+P to rotate through my carry gun just cost me more than that 2k of ball/range ammo cost me to reload.

Not following...So you reload your carry ammo? Or you ran out of target ammo and had to practice with carry ammo? :?

I think he was saying he shoots his carry ammo to make sure it feeds properly. Reloading it or not, it is harder to find if he needs a specific bullet to relaod for carry. If he doesn't reload it, it's just damn expensive to replace.

I would normally reload Gold Dots to carry. I don't have any, so I actually had to buy some.

I have plenty of "target" ammo.

Still don't follow, why do you constantly need to test if your gun will feed your carry ammo? Did something change? Once you find good ammo that runs you are good. I get practicing, but 200rds of SD ammo? Jesus. 20 rounds plus 200 round ball would do the job.

I hear you on the prices though, I'm considering rolling my own SD ammo just to practice with from time to time...

Why would you shoot 2,000 rds of carry ammo for a class? You could have used ball ammo.

I shot 2k of ball. It cost the same as 200 of carry. That was the point.

I shoot up my carry ammo every month or so.

YMMV

Yeah, I know. Just thought everybody else was messin' with ya, so I joined in. Sorry. I understood you first post. Dang, you burn down your carry ammo pretty often. I run it after I notice it looks tarnished.

I have already used up all my "gunfight" luck for my lifetime. I figure it checks the ammo and the guns and is a small price to pay.

I have a new Shield, so I just need the 200 round to last until I can get bullets to reload.

Maybe you should only buy 1 box per month. :P  Or do you plan to loose over 20 rounds at one time during your dynamic critical incident? ;)

ETA, Oh, saw you were breaking in the shield. Nice! :)

I usually just reload what I shoot.

You have a line on premium 9mm bullets?

Wait, so you do reload SD ammo?

And do you mean bullets or ammunition?

I have a contact at Reloading Den in TN that gets Zero brand directly from the factory. He goes there weekly to pickup his supplies. His website is still under construction but his phone number is 615-761-4633 and his name is Greg Smith. His prices are just a little high, but I assure you he will give you the best customer service you will get anywhere. His supplies go out extremely fast each week, but he will get you quality FMJ ammo, when others aren't getting it out. I get NOTHING for recommending him, but if you let him know I (Jim Roberts from MN) referred you, he will know how you found him. He hopes to have his website up and running by the end of this month. It is parially operating now at http://www.reloadingden.net and I believe I was the first to register on his site. He's still small enough to provide the small town personal service, and I hope he grows successfully, but not to the point he can't continue the personal service (he gave me his home number in case of urgent needs) that others have forgot to give.

I wondered about giving away my supplier because of my own supply needs, but everyone here has helped me so much, I thought I would try to "Pay it forward", like I promised another member I would. Greg also carries other reloading supplies, such as parts for Dillon's (I just got another friend parts for his 550b, that he couldn't find locally).

Yes, I normally reload my carry ammo.

I am currently unable to obtain quality bullets to do so, and had to purchase 200 rounds of "premium" carry ammo. So, I am referring to both bullets (for me to reload) and factory ammo (which I had to buy).

Hence the whining. Apparently quality carry-ammo from the factory is worth approx the same as gold bullion by weight.

(As posted in the OP, I do have a "metric ass-ton" of FMJ 9mm bullets to reload, but thanks for the heads-up)
