crimping when reloading

Postby rtwills on Fri Apr 19, 2013 4:06 pm

At the last gun show, there was a guy who has a tool for the press for crimping. It is a modified torque wrench that replaces the press handle. He claims that by crimping this way , the crimp is more accurate. Basically, instead of measuring the diameter, you set the crimp by inch pounds. He also stated it works great on pistol rounds , since they may vary in length which has no effect on the inch pounds related to the crimp.Has anyone had any experience with this? It seemed like the cats meow, but i was hesitant for never hearing of this technique before.

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem to me.

Interesting idea, but there are too many other variables for this to work on a progressive press. The only thing I crimp are pistol rounds, which get loaded on the Dillon. So it would be of no value to me.

If you turn the die in or out even half a turn, it would greatly effect the force going into the crimp.

Ask OldmanFCSA, I'm sure he knows about this.

After he gets off the week long ban.

Oh, that would be nice, BUT HE GOT BANNED for a Week. Now, there's no one to point this lad in the proper direction.

Please go over and let Oldman he is both missed and NOT forgotten!

I have been to his place a few times and not a single time has passed, that I didn't learn something about shooting or reloading. He is one of the most knowledgeable and most friendly persons I have ever met. Not once have I contacted him with a question that he didn't stop what he was doing to answer my question and then explain it in terms I (the reloading Noob) could fully understand. He has become a good friend, that I am extremely proud to have. He will be back soon.

Oldman got banned and I DIDN'T?? WTF is wrong with this picture?? He tries to be nice to n00bs and actually tutor them, while I just get disgusted, give them an almighty kick in the ass, roast them alive, and then give the chewy bits to my dog Sasha.

I too have seen the torque wrench thingy, and was intrigued, but not by $80 worth. And FWIW, I would never consider this for pistol at all. No point!! 95% of the accuracy from a pistol comes from the loose nut behind the trigger, and I doubt that you could see the difference at all without a Ransom Machine Rest. For my .338 Ultramag or any other long range gun, this could be something very useful. My initial attempts at crimping a .338 with one of those Lee dies really didn't show me any good results, but this setup might do the trick. Currently I run no crimp with the bullet .020" off the lands and a .001 - .0015 runout, and leave it at that.

+2 on this one. Cobb needs to insert his left finger in his right ear and pull until he hears a pop. He may find the air is better that way. Suspending OldmanFCSA for giving advice on the Market Forum is just plain stupid.

Now it is someone elses fault that after several warnings OM still did the same thing and then got banned for not obeying the rules :?: :?: :?:

Yes it sucks but if he can't read, understand or obey rules even after being warned...................... Pretty simple rules, don't put ANY bs in the market forum.

Maybe it is because the rules are written in a way that is referred to as "Fly Paper Rules" where a person violates them just by buzzing around on the forum without malicious intent to violate the rules.

same rules as many other gun forums use for their market place.

Another forum market place rules
" Re: BS in Classifieds
For some reason we are having a huge issue with this right now.
If you don't like the price of an item - don't buy it. But under no circumstances can you call someone out on it in their thread or by posting a new one pointing it out.
Send the seller a pm explaining why you think they are overpriced. It's not up to you to police it.
Hit the report button at the bottom of the post and let one of us take care of it.
You will get a timeout for bsing in the classifieds. It bumps that ad up over other peoples classified ads.
Thank you"

Another forum
"NO extraneous posts!
If you are not doing business in an ad thread, do NOT post in that thread!
This isn't a discussion forum- this is a listing service.
Non-business dialog like:
"nice gun"
"wish I could buy it"
"price is too high"
is forbidden. These extraneous posts bump an ad an unfair number of times, and deprive other less interesting ads of their turn at the top of the page. "

Several more that are basically the same. What is there that people do not understand????
