I picked up a Savage MKII BTVS Saturday. Spent the evening conditioning the barrel and doing a trigger job. Then it struck me. I shot my 10/22 last when Bush was president and my High Standard HD Military once last year. What do I have for 22 ammo on hand? I found a 3 surplus plastic 50rd boxes I topped off with Remington Bulk HP back around 2005, but that was it. Dove into my garage sale box and found partial boxes of 20-30 old Federal Monark, Rem Hi Vel, and Federal Hi Power. Well, they'd do for barrel break-in and zeroing the scope I thought. Some shot well, others had a lot of vertical stringing, but they got me through an enjoyable 3 hours at the range today (in the shade).
Now what? When I bought the rifle from Arnzen, I had hoped they had boxes stashed for sale to people who bought guns there. Dream on. Slipped across the freeway to GM and once again left asking myself why I even bother going there. Swung by FF in Carver and nada.
Looking back on the recent times I picked up other ammo I didn't need to sell to the locals at cost, perhaps I should have been on the lookout for some 22 also. Ya' Think!
If anyone gets a line on either bulk or quality 22 ( I'd like to try both), non-scalped, please PM me night or day. I'm in front of a PC almost all the time at work and within earshot of a smart phone often when I'm not at work. Still want to try and find what my rifle shoots well. It did turn two 5-shot 1/2 MOA 50 yd groups, but not reliably with the stuff I took there. One was with the old Remington Hi Vel SP and one with the Federal Monarch SP. The bulk Federal HP stuff I have the most of, not so well. Still, it was fun to go to the range without having to set up my chrony for some centerfire rifle experiment. Just have fun! Since the wind was almost non-existent, I even tried 10) 100 yd shots of the bulk Rem. Centering was good, but POI was -5 1/2 inches and vertical stringing was from -5 1/2 to -8 1/2 low. Guess you got to sort them by weight and rim thickness to play at 100 yd. That or not use old ammo.
Thanks,
Hoot
BTW, Fit and function of the rifle was great, but then I love the ergonomics of thumbhole stocks. Have four others.
