How do you empty powder measure?

Postby Duff-Man on Sun Aug 11, 2013 6:29 pm

So I was cleaning up after my last batch and I was emptying the powder measure by lifting the handle 'x' number of times. Is this how everyone else does it? I have a lock nut on the powder measure so it is a little more work to just flip it upside down.

Throw a match in, it burns off quick.

Emptying the case and bullet feeders is much harder. You can't burn off the excess and it takes much more work to tip it out.

Maybe if you did the math before you reloaded you wouldn't end up with extra powder in your measurer to begin with!

I'm assuming you're talking about one that doesn't come off easily like a Dillon or something. A Lee will turn and lock, then just pull off and dump the hopper.

On my Dillon, I pull the whole thing off shake and dump, shake and dump, then blow out with compressed air.

Mine is connected to the bench not on a progressive. But I suppose if I din't lock the lock nut pulling it off the bench wouldn't be a big deal.

I did that with the Lee today, even after it locks you will lose the powder that in the auto discs.....it will make a mess. Think best solution is to charge cases and dump them out back into the powder container....but I am a n00b.

How much does the bench weigh?

Well that would just lead to the next question, "how much can I lift?" and I'd rather not go there.

WHY would you use such a locknut that was not easily removable ??

I've been reloading 40+ years and all my powder dumps are easily removable for doing a mass dump.

Unless you have a wife and kids, then it would be the sum total.

It came with the measure and it seemed like a good idea to use it at the time.

True wonder why people don't use those all the time.
