carry ammo in Glocks?

Postby grousemaster on Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:30 pm

I know the old rule of thumb is "put a couple boxes of your carry ammo through the gun to make sure it eats it". I've put about every carry load from most manufacturers through several Glocks. I've since gotten lazy and decided a mag though it to verify it feeds, etc. it is fine, then I carry it. Has anyone had issues with ANY carry ammo from a major mfg with a modern plastic fantastic? (Glock, XD, Springer, Sig, etc?). The high end carry ammo from about every mfg these days just seems to ALWAYS work. Am I being negligent by not doing the two box test?

I think the fact you are asking this question is your answer. If you were 100% confident that ANY carry ammo was fine I feel the question wouldn't have come up in your mind. I would recommend spending the $$$ on a couple boxes of carry ammo and hitting the range...worse case it gives you an execuse to go shoot. Every gun is different and just because one eats ammo fine doesn't mean they all will....not worth waiting to find out if you ever need it!

Glock seems to feed anything, but you could always do the poor mans hp feed test.

Load up a mag with carry ammo of choice. Lock slide back, use the slide release to chamber a round, lock slide back and repeat for each round in mag (and keep the booger hook off the bang switch while doing this!). By using this method, I could buy one box each of a variety of hp ammo and eliminate problematic ammo in multiple guns.

Of course shooting live ammo is the best. If a particular type fed fine manually then I shoot at least 50 consecutive problem free rounds before I carry it, and blast off the carry mag in the gun every couple of months to retest. Watch for bullet setback if you do this several times with the same ammo (I dedicate a separate box of ammo as manual test ammo only because of this).

I've only tried Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot; both worked fine in five different models, two calibers.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever had a quality SD round not feed in Glocks, to affirm my own conclusion no testing is needed with Glocks. It's too expensive to be blowing through SD ammo....

I would not suggest carrying ammo that hasn't been verified to function in the gun.... That said, I have never come across a factory round that wouldn't feed in a Glock; I can't say that about any other platform except the 92fs.

More than a mag needed to "verify"?

I agree that you probably won't have any issues with SD ammo in the glock....that being said 25 bucks for one box is worth the peace of mind IMO.
