using Blade Feeler Gauge to verify calipers

Postby gun_fan111 on Sun Sep 15, 2013 6:59 pm

So I was buying a set of check weights and saw these http://www.amazon.com/25025-26-Blade-Ma ... eler+gauge.

Since I wanted to have something to verify my calipers as well, I decided to give it a try.

Surprisingly - these $4 blades agree with my calipers to within +-0.0005"!

Or both of them are off ;)
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?

Heh, thanks, I'll have to try that, especially since I dropped my calipers on the cement floor.

I guess I'm lucky. My mother-in-law does final and dimensional inspection on medical implant devices, so I had her take both my dial and digital calipers in to work and they used a "standard" to verify they are correct. She also verified my micrometers as well.

You can pickup a standard for about $6 on ebay (the last time I looked about 6 months ago). They are a little more from Sears. I like to verify my measuring tools just to be certain they're correct.

Good point; in fact, I figure if I put 'em in the gun and the cylinder turns, it's good.

Caliper is only good to + or - .003, maybe .002..

Heck you can squeeze .002 out of one easily..

If you are really worried you can get a surface plate, a test indicator, and a set of gage blocks.

But lets be real, a hair off your head will measure .002/.003 anyways..

Best thing you can do is keep your tools clean. And be careful with the blades on your caliper, they do wear!

I do have a surface plate etc.... I just wanted to make sure the calipers were "in the ball park" :D

Many years ago I deveolped and ran the dimensional inspection department for the jet engine shop I worked for in Miami. I still have a few different gauges just wish I still had my Vernier Height gauge. I lost it it 2009 when my house burned down. It, and a several other inspection tools were lost, and I most likely will never be able to replace them. Not that I need them any longer. I'm just a sucker for nice tooling
