135 grain 10mm load data?

Postby grousemaster on Sat Oct 05, 2013 10:39 am

Anyone know where I can get data for the 135 grain nosler JHP's for 10mm? Not finding any real sources online and my books only go down to 155 grain.

Even someone willing to text or email me a picture of the data from a book would be very helpful. Using Power Pistol and Blue Dot mainly...

I assume you are going for lower recoil in a 10mm? If you're going for SD loads, I'd buy from CorBon or DoubleTap. Bullets that light do have to be set up right to be lethal and NOT just blow up on the outside inch of the perp, and some of those 135 and lower SD loads have ungodly high velocities. With a 200 grain Hornady XTP you just load to 1200 FPS and you're good to go.

That being said, I do have Nosler #7, and they list their 135 grain JHP, and the most accurate powder is (of course) Blue Dot!! Duh! OAL 1.260"
11.5 grs - 1308 FPS
12.0 grs - 1383 FPS
12.5 grs - 1459 FPS MAX

I think that data is lawyered up a bit, and you can peruse the factory loadings to see what they list as FPS. I have managed to get a 165 up close to 1400, so the 135 can probably go faster, but don't bet your life on it!!

Aha!! I was right! DoubleTap puts out a SD round that uses the 135 grain Nosler and the FPS is 1600!!

If you need data, PM me your direct email and I can get you whatever is available through LoadData.com. I can print it as a pdf file and email it to you. They usually have all known published data. I've helped a few others find data, when they couldn't locate it elsewhere.

Thanks Sam, that's exactly what I was going for. Actually looking for a flat shooting round with violent expansion....taking a trip to Montana next month and we see a ton of coyotes while out bird hunting. Coyotes unprotected there so thought if I saw one out to 100 yds away may take a poke at him. Better than a .45ACP anyway!!!

I'm not so sure about the 135's at 100 yards, unless you really need a low recoil round because of a wrist injury. Used Sierra Infinity 6 to calculate the trajectory for 135, 180, and 200 bullets going 1459, 1300, and 1200 FPS respectively. While the first chart shows that the 135 gets you 1.5 inches less drop at 100 yards, the energy chart shows that the hitting power of the 135 goes all to hell at 100 yards compared to the 180 or the 200. It's like half the ft-lbs at 100 yards. Those 135 rounds are personal defense rounds for close up only, and for hunting it's the 180 or the 200.

Glad to have someone who knows their way around the 10mm for me to ask these types of questions! Maybe that's why the hornady book doesn't have 135 grain data, because the 135 sucks in the 10mm! I've got 250 projectiles to burn up none the less....

Burn them up on the range at 25 yards to sharpen your shooting accuracy. Or 50 yards if you want a little more of a challenge and to get used to longer shots. Use 180's or 200's for the 'yotes.

That's pretty interesting data Sam. Thanks.
I would have never thought the trajectories would be so similar, or the terminal ballistics so varied.

What if I get that 135 grain pill to 1600fps though? :D

Double Tap and Underwood do it

Yes, they and CorBon all do it, because they have pressure barrels, buy an entire lot of powder, make up a max load based on pressure (SAAMI max 37,500 for 10mm) and run out that batch of powder, and print up the boxes with the velocity accordingly. That's why there is a footnote that various batches will have slightly differing velocities. You and I can't do that, so fahgedabahit!!

P.S. Even at 1600 FPS the energy at 100 yards still goes down the toilet (purple dotted line)

Even the energy advantage stops at 35 yards.....very interesting. Thanks a lot for the info Sam.
