38 spl ammo

Postby Scratch on Tue Dec 31, 2013 1:47 pm

I need to buy one box of plinking ammo for 38 spl, for a test fire. I'm looking for suggestions on what to get. Like if you told me 9mm, I'd say 115gr FMJ would be some good cheap plinking rounds.
Or 55gr for an AR 15.

I've never bought any 38 spl so what should I get?

Depends what you want. In jacketed I run 130gr Win whitebox, in lead 158 will be more popular. I'd run either for paper punching.

What are you running this in? Rifle, Revolver, Auto(yes they are rare but they do make them and you have to run FWC in it), barrel lenght?

I second that. What firearm is it for?

But even with that, if it is just for plinking what does it matter? Most (when I say "most" we take things with a grain of salt) factory ammo works in most firearms just fine.

I've got two 100% factory firearms that would disagree, that work wonderfully however with the right tweak on the reloading press but I digress. Feed us some details, you must know something more to the situation!

A guy had a brand new S&W bodyguard revolver come in and wanted me to inspect, clean, and test fire it.
He said shoot about 5 rounds though it, and leave the rest for him to use up at the range.

I was heading into town and was looking for some popular weights.

Turns out all they had was some 125 gr FMJ Blazer Brass. Will have to be good enough, I ain't going on a quest for five shots for someone else's gun.

Well i lived vicariously through your range experience. Thanks.

Taking a general judgement on your guy and saying he probably wont know the difference whatever you buy. My opinion on factory ammo is its either light and fast or it is heavy and slow. But, the range between both ends of the spectrum is generally so small in a common caliber it isnt that big of a deal to me at least.

In a tiny revo though I would go with the lightest grain I could have probably. For enjoyable plinking that is as close as it gets for a small framed gun that isnt considered comfortable to shoot IMO.
