RCBS 44 mag to LEE?

Postby JeffD on Thu Feb 06, 2014 7:59 pm

So i have a 3 die set for 44 mag in RCBS. I used to use them on my buddies single stage. I now have a LEE 4 hole turret press. I would like to use the powder through die with my auto disk. Since I have a 4 hole set up I would need an LEE powder through die and then a factory crimp die to get me to the 4 die set up I need on my press. So, I would need to buy 2 LEE dies to go with 2 of my 3 RCBS dies to make this work. The 2 LEE dies cost 31 bucks. A new set of 4 LEE dies cost $41.

So.... What to do? Does anyone have any extra dies or want to buy my RCBS dies? Or other options? If I am wrong let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'm assuming that the RCBS set has a carbide size die. If not, nobody who is a reloader is going to want to buy that set. You cam mix the two brands of dies if you want, and with the expander/powder Lee die look carefully at the expander part. Some of the Lee expander are very coarsely machined and then hardened, and the ridges can actually be rough enough to grind a little brass off the inside of the case mouth, and the press pull feels really gritty. If you get that, you have to polish the expander part of the die. Also depending on the angle of the expander itself, setting it properly can be a real bitch. If the angle is steep, you have to set the die dead nuts on or you'll bell the case mouth too much or too little. Seating and then crimping the round in two separate dies is the proper way to do it, so that will be an advantage with a 4 die set.

RM, if he doesn't want them I could absolutely use them. I have a buddy asking me to load him some 44 ammo but I don't have a set of dies to load with. Somehow, I ended up with all the components, just no dies. I've been trying to justify getting a set, but he's the only one I know that needs 44 . I prefer Lee because of the powder thru die and how it works well with my Lee presses.

Someone can have them. I don't mind helping fellow reloaders. As long as people use the stuff. I have another hobby and I have sold stuff cheaply in that arena only to find that buyers just flipped the stuff for a quick profit. I suppose if I sell something and get my price what do I care, but it still irks me. Anyway, I have Lee dies in 44...
