Winchester/Western 230 Powder

Postby PowderBurn14 on Wed Feb 19, 2014 1:55 am

Hey all, I have 2 full cans of Winchester/Western 230 powder. From the info I am finding online it was made in the late 60's or early 70's. Due to the fact that powder has been so hard to find lately I want to find some loading data for it and use it up. According to my burn rate chart it appears to be a hair slower burning than Bullseye. I would like to load it in .38 Special and maybe .45 Auto. The powder looks good, smells right and the inside of the steal cans are bright and shiny with no corrosion. Does anyone have any old reloading manuals that list W-230 data? Thanks

I have an old Lyman manual from that era, in it they list an SP230 but I don't know if it is the same.

PM me with E-Mail address

My Lyman #45 is slightly too old to have that data, but my Speer #8 Manual has data for 38 Spl and 45. In both cases, W-W 230-P as it's listed is for cast bullets.

According to Sierra #1 (1971)
.45 ACP
185 gr JHP 4.8- 6.5 max. Max load is listed as 1050 FPS, so its probably a bit on the warm side.

They also listed it with .38 Super loads and .380, but no 9mm or .38/357 loads in that manual. All the loads have velocities that are rather higher on the top end than what are currently listed as achievable. Use at your own discretion.

If you will pm me your email address I'll check loaddata.com and if they have recipes I can save them as pdf files and email them directly to you.

For the .38 Special they only show two loads for a 148gr Wadcutter. One specified for a 5" and one for a 6" bbl.

For the .45 ACP they have five loads listed. PM or email me directly and I can send you the data that Loaddata.com has listed.
