.17 Hornet

Hey, all. Was wondering if anyone had seen any of the 'new' baby Hornet around? I can't seem to find any around my usual haunts. I just picked up a Ruger 77/17 and I'm itching to break her in.

I've been reading up on reloading for a couple months, but I think the lack of availability of this new-to-me caliber might put a fire under me to get that going sooner rather than later. Anyone set up to reload this caliber that has any tips?

Anywho, either leads on ammo or tips for reloading this caliber in particular are welcome. Have a good week, gents.

Both of Hornady's 17 Hornet sku's are on the suspended list they put out last summer. I haven't seen any updates to think that list will be going away any time soon.

Brass and ammo is hard to come by right now. Some people are asking more than new prices for used .22 Hornet brass.

There is some .17 Hornet ammo available on GunBroker.com, but it's quite expensive.

I do have some Win unfired 22 Hornet brass and could probably part with enough to keep you shooting for a while.
I don't know how difficult it is to resize to 17 or if the dies are even available.
Just trying to help a brother out.

The latest that I heard from the group over on the Saubier.com forum is that new brass and ammo were supposed to be available towards the end of February but that has now been pushed out to middle of summer or late fall. Apparently they are having manufacturing problems with the cases.

I read on predator masters the primer holes were too big on some of the brass.
They also said hornady was not making the brass. It will all get sorted out if the cartridge becomes popular.
Sadly that doesn't help when you want to shoot your new toy.

Getting dies shouldn't be a problem. .224 down to .17 is a pretty big step, so an intermediate die is reccomended, but not necissary. You would more than likely need to neck turn the brass after sizing down, or you will end up with uneven and/or overly thick necks.

All in all, reloading is probably going to be your only option for quite some time if you want to shoot your new toy.

That's incredibly generous. I'm kind of at a crossroads on whether I want to sell the gun and take a loss or have a gun that could potentially spend lots of time in the safe while I search for ammo (which is the greater sin). I'm leaning towards keep it unfired in case I do decide to sell, but give it some time to see if Hornady can start producing enough to meet demand. So I'll respectfully decline for now, but I really do appreciate it.

I think you're right. I want to get some reloading under my belt before I tackle resizing multiple times to get the correct dimensions. Looks like there's just cleaning and liberal use of my imagination for the time being.

It's available in both calibers, but I opted for Hornet. That would have been an embarrassing oversight.

That's too bad. I own a .17 HMR and it is addicting to shoot. Ammo is easier to find than .22 LR right now. $15 a box. If it were me I would sell. .17 hornet is a cool round don't get me wrong. For me I just want cheap and readily available ammo for my guns. I used to reload but its hard to find a couple hours to go to the range and even harder yet to sit down and make 200 rounds.
