Ahlmans reloading seminar Thursday??

Postby benny on Tue Mar 04, 2014 6:40 pm

Any one headed to Ahlman's Thursday for their reloading sale/seminar?? I need a few bags of shot and maybe some powders. I have cash to pay for my items just can not get out of work to drive there.

I hope the link below works or you will have to go to their web site and look under events.

If you are going and don't mind picking me up about 4 or 5 bags of shot and some small kegs of powder let me know!

Thanks for posting this. I plan on heading up there to see what it is all about. I am afraid that I don't live anywhere near you or I would help you out.

I was going to ask the same thing...I had a meeting that I forgot about so I couldn't go.

I went. The weather was crappy, but they didn't cancel.

Shot was $37 a bag or so.

They had lots of wads, just not Federal.

They had a relatively good supply of primers, but only limited brands. I think Mike said that he hasn't seen a Federal match primer in well over a year.

They had a reasonably good selection of rifle bullets yesterday. Some Hornady, some Nosler, and some Sierra.

I was one of the last folks out, there was still a fair amount of powder and primers on the shelf, with a good selection for the times.

Brass- not much, but I did find some .44-40.

They had a pair of reps from Hornady and a guy from Nosler. The hornady guys did a reloading demo, The Nosler guy mostly talked about the M48 rifles and the .26 Nosler cartridge. Since I don't have a big enough overbore gun, I ordered one.

Holy *******! The 6.5x284 is a barrel burner, the .264 Win Mag never caught on because it was even worse and now this? I bet they won't even get 500 rounds of accurate life out of one of those.
I will never apologize for being an American.

Yeah.

Its a .404 Jeffrey (same parent as the ultra mag or the WSM series) necked down to .264.

I asked why they went to that instead of the .416 Rigby case, and they said that they thought this would give some degree of useful barrel life.

They are aiming at the extreme long range hunting group, although in general any long range pursuit it should be good for.

They were saying that the target is 3400 FPS with a heavy for caliber high BC bullet...

Choice of powder used will greatly affect barrel life.
Most of the barrel erosion is cause by coarse burning powder scraping on throat, so a cooler initial burn using a ball type powder will reduce the erosion and increase barrel life.
