.22 LR

A place to discuss calibers, ammunition, and reloading

I agree with you. I can load and shoot 45 ACP for 10cents per with cast bullets. The hard spot is shooting with the little one. Trying to teach rifle skills with out a .22 is challenging. Rolling over to an air rifle.

Cast boolits have kept me shooting 9mm and 380acp this year, way cheaper than 22lr. Even reloading for my 223 is cheaper most of the time. But getting hard to find my favorite powder(CFE223)

Whats with the unavailability of .22 LR?

I see lots of talk about the return of the .22LR, but all I see for sale is .08 to .15 cents a shot. I can reload my .38's for that. But I cannot reload my .22's. I think as long as it takes a buck to shot one mag of .22's, it is gone as my go to plinking round and total fun recreation round to just sit and burn up a brick in an afternoon with the kids. I know folks at Federal and the cost of making them has not increased that much, that they cannot come down to nearly half that with out loosing their shirt. It is just another problem we have to live with and learn to open up other doors. Like finding scrap lead and trading it for boolits.
Making our own ammo is becoming a necessity rather than a hobby for us fixed income older retired guys. And More power to us for it. POOP on the .22's for now  .

paying around .05 to .07 cents when I see them.. Have bought a few boxes @ Joe's Sporting Goods recently...usually have some brand of 22 LR on the shelf... at least the few times I was there

I’ve been finding plenty of .22 LR online (actually more than I need) from Cabela’s and Gander. Prices including sales tax are usually around .05 -.08 cents a round, and both places offer free shipping to the store. I would rather purchase it that way, versus wasting time and gas money driving around to different stores hoping to find some.

.22 LR Winchester M-22 (800 round boxes) is available at Gander right now...about 6.2 cents a round.

You must watch the sites more carefully than I do. I've checked both of those places a couple times a day since it was mentioned earlier in this thread and only once have I actually encountered bulk packs in stock. And that one was at Gander for about 9 cents per round which is quite a bit more than I'm looking to spend. I don't really NEED any right now since I don't shoot much in the winter, but I was just curious to learn about the availability and patterns of the sites. Haven't learned much yet.

Yep, it goes fast once it pops up. Several other folks on other gun forums always post the links as soon as the ammo becomes available. That's probably the main reason everything sells out almost immediately. Plus, some guys have alerts set on their phones/computers and when the alarm goes off, bingo, they know immediately when there is ammo to be had.

I've got more than enough now to last me through this season of 4 Position Rimfire league. More than happy to leave them on the shelf and help the shortage decline. Still need to find the cheap bulk packs for my .22 3-gun training rifle though.

My 2 x 500 boxes arrived today. Have a pretty good supply of .22lr now so I'll be passing it by for awhile.

It really is a matter of perception. If I dip below 20,000 rds I start to exibit flu-like symptoms. currently at about 30. Don't think I've ever sold any. if I did, it was to one of you folks. given 3-4 thousand to friends during the shortage.
