Out-of-spec rim on WCC .223 brass

Postby MXGreg on Wed Dec 31, 2014 9:27 pm

I picked up some .223/5.56 brass for reloading. A couple hundred of them are head stamped WCC at 12 o'clock, 06 or 09 at 7 o'clock, and a small "s" at 5 o'clock. All of these cases have a rim diameter of .360" instead of the normal .378". I didn't notice the under sized rim until I started priming them and they kept popping out of my hand primer.

I've never seen the "s" before, anyone know what it stands for?

These were supposed to be "once fired" cases and it doesn't look like the rims have been turned down. Any ideas why they would be under sized like this? All other dimensions are correct.

Thanks for any help. Looks like I've got more brass for the scrap bucket. :(

My guess would be that the s stands for simunition

Simulation rounds, the hazard of buying 'once fired' brass. You really don't know what it is or if really is once fired. Most is just range brass, and in fairness a lot is once fired. However missed in the mess is, 10 times reloaded 45 acp, the major loaded 9mm, the newbie reloaded 40 that is over pressure and of course every other piece of junk no one picked up. Reloading this stuff is just to much risk in my book.

Thanks guys. I did a little research and it seems the reason for the rim difference is so you can't put a lethal round into a gun that has the simunition bolt in it. Into the scrap bucket it goes!

Why not contact the vendor for (partial) refund or replacement?

I did that after my last post. Being it's New Years Eve/Day I'm not expecting a quick response.

Update: My replacement brass will be in the mail tomorrow. :)

I toss all the WCC I get in mixed HS 5.56 brass. Some will prime ok but most pop out of a dillon shell plate. As I recall they worked on my single stage press.
