How about some reloading stickies

Postby Mauser98 on Mon Feb 09, 2015 2:58 pm

I didn't want to derail the neck tension thread by plink so I thought I'd see what the concensus is for creating some sticky threads for new reloaders. With the way some of the threads can get into a battle of who's a more experienced reloader, or the only thing they'll do is blow themselves up, maybe we could get some more serious conversations on the subject, instead of the doom and gloom.

Most other forums with reloading areas have very informative stickied threads that members can point to for new people asking questions. I think they would be a handy feature for those new to reloading here. The other option is to just link to those other sites stickies.

Any opinions either way?

I figure members could write up about a certain aspect, and vet it with another member as to accuracy, content, readability, etc.

I'm guilty here, about Sticky's.
Cobb has asked me to edit one of my postings to Sticky it at the beginning of the Reloading Forum, I have not completed it as I was considering leaving the Forum when we were having all the issues with bombing out.
I may need to re-consider - how do you guys feel about it ???

It would be massively helpful. It's hard to take good notes and work a press at the same time.

I guess I would prefer to have the postings that are good enough for that kind of thing be moved to a no new posts area.

Many of the other forums I have seen end up with almost the entire first page being sticky threads of some sort.

If that is to be done, I would suggest that any comments that do not contain information be cleaned out to get rid of clutter. Things, like "Gee, I never realized that, thanks" and similar so the stickies is useful info.

I will edit one or three of my postings to be forwarded to Cobb for his review prior to being "Stickied".

How about some reloading stickies

Postby Mauser98 on Tue Feb 10, 2015 8:36 am

Thank you to Oldman.

Mods, I think it would make more sense to have them as stickies at the top of the reloading forum instead of in the Reference forum. If a person comes looking for reloading advice, they usually steer to the reloading section, not the reference section. In the reference section, they are mixed in with the legal questions and other misc topics.

Maybe this forum doesn't permit stickies? If that is the case, then the reference section is probably our best recourse.

Everyone does realize that there is a search function that can be used to find info.

Fixed it for ya!!! :P :P

And without getting back on the pulpit, would anybody care to estimate the percentage of people who come in here and DON'T use the search function before they ask for info??

That being said, the stickies are something this forum should try!!

Chambering Problems

Postby noylj on Wed Feb 25, 2015 6:52 pm

The solution to chambering problems is always the same:
Take the barrel out of the gun. Drop rounds in until you find one that won't chamber. Take that round and "paint" the bullet and case black with Magic Marker or other marker. Drop round in barrel (or gage) and rotate it back-and-forth.
Remove and inspect the round:
1) scratches on bullet--COL is too long
2) scratches on case mouth--insufficient crimp
3) scratches just below the case mouth--too much crimp, you're crushing the case
4) scratches on case at base of bullet--bullet seated crooked due to insufficient case expansion (not case mouth flare) or improper seating stem fit
5) scratches on case just above extractor groove--case bulge not removed during sizing. May need a bulge buster.
