Case condtion 5.56

Postby fjrdc on Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:07 pm

I just purchased a couple of 20 packs of American Eagle brand 55 grain , just curious if it's normal to have small dents in the cases . I don't expect the cartridges to be spotless and shiny .....

..................................................................
Small dents will not adversely affect performance.

It is not new brass.

Where did you get your information for that statement?

American Eagle, in a factory box, is factory new brass - not re-manufactured.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

+1

Federal does not "RE-manufacture" ammunition.

Depending on who you purchased it from - some distributors during the crunch were buying non-visualized ammo from manufacturers...essentially visual seconds...for a lower price in order to simply have something on their shelves. Ballistics were still required to be within normal specs.

Some places were selling bulk pack 223 too. Loose packed 1k rounds to a box. They pick up dents.

Finally had some time to get some pics of the cartridges, these were picked off a shelf at Cabelas in 20 round packs

That is from the Lake City Ammo plant that makes military ammo. It is good to go and a few dents here and there are normal. It has a crimped primer if you are planning to reload.

I could be wrong (it happens once a year and I'm due) but that brass appears to have been fired given the discoloration around the neck. If I purchased 'new' ammo and saw that it would be back at the store fast. Federals site does not say anything about used brass.

That brass wasn't polished after annealing, just like .mil contract ammo. It's good to go
