.375 Winchester

Postby Snakeman721 on Sun Aug 02, 2015 8:35 am

Has anybody seen ANY .375 Winchester ammo around anywhere? It's been out of stock everywhere I look for well over 2 years now. Midway says that it's a seasonal run...well what kind of season runs over 2 years? I have a 94 Big Bore and would like to shoot it, but if Winchester decided to not make any more ammo at all, well....that would suck. :(

FROM ANOTHER FORUM, DATA IS NOT MINE.

It's a little more complicated than that, and why it may or may not be a bad idea matters. And if you take Lyman's advice you won't be shooting your .375 any time soon.

.375 Win brass has been basically unobtainable for the last couple years as it is one of the calibers WIn only runs occasionally and they have not done so since the last election and the resulting shortages. There are some options, but you need to understand what's available and the differences:

1) Chambers differ in .375 Win. For example, the initial early production Big Bore 94s had very generous throats and will chamber the 2.080" Winchester length .38-55 round - probably due to concerns that people would fire .38-55 in them anyway. In that regard, depending on what you have, some .38-55 brass may work in your .375 without trimming. Having a chamber cast made will answer that for you. But you'll still need to respect the much lower pressure limitations of the .38-55 brass.

2) .38-55 brass comes in three different flavors:

- Winchester brass is 2.080" long and has comparatively thick walls at the mouth that work well with smaller diameter jacketed bullets. That makes sense given that Big W produced 200 and 250 gr jacketed loads for the .375 Win.

- Starline makes brass in the same 2.080" length but with a thinner wall at the mouth (.0072") that is better suited to larger diameter cast bullets and/or tighter chambers.

- Starline also makes 2.125" long .38-55 brass. This also has the thinner .0072 thick walls at the mouth and is intended for use in longer chambered .38-55s. It will chamber in most .38-55s, but I doubt it will chamber in any .375 without being trimmed.

3) .375 Win brass differs from .38-55 brass in two ways:

- first it is 2.020" long - .060" shorter than the "short" .38-55 brass;

- second, it has slightly thicker case walls designed for the 52,000 CUP pressure of the .375 Win (compared to 38,000 CUP / 42,000 psi for the .30-30, and ,30,000 psi for the .38-55.

4) You can fire form *new* .30-30 brass to .375 Win dimensions (or very close to it). I use 8.0 grains of Unique and then fill the case to within about 1/4" of the top of the mouth with cream of wheat, and then hold it in place with a pea sized wad of toilet paper. If you fire the round vertically, it will produce nice, even mouths on the new case that require very little trimming to square up and the resulting length is about 2.018" long. Close enough to .375 length to not make a difference, although you again have to consider the lower pressure of the .30-30 compared to the .375 Win.

Number 4 is probably a better idea than using .38-55 brass. The advantage of this approach is that you can use readily available .30-30 brass and the brass is designed for 42,000 psi .30-30 loads rather than .38-55 loads, so it's a little closer to .375 thickness. I have measured the internal volume of Winchester made .375 Win cases and Winchester made .30-30 cases fire formed in the above manner. When both are sized in the same die, the average case capacity of the .375 brass is slighter smaller, indicating thicker walls. However I noted over lap between the samples with the largest .375 cases having more capacity than the smallest .30-30 cases, so the two are fairly close.

I would not push the .30-30>.375 brass to full .375 Win pressures, but it is great for mid range cast bullet loads and jacketed bullet loads up to 42,000-43,000 psi.

Personally, I reserve my .375 Win brass for full power jacketed .375 Win loads and use .30-30>.375 brass for everything else as I think it's going to be a long time before we see new .375 Win brass or ammo again.

Thanks for the info Oldman. I knew about using 38-55 brass and firing forming 30-30. Something I'll keep in mind if I REALLY REALLY need some new brass. I have some 375 ammo (maybe 4-5 boxes) but wanted to stock up some more. I could use another 200 or so rounds....or new brass. Like the previous poster said, I think I need to check out Boone's :D

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but Midway sent me an e-mail saying they had .375 Winchester IN STOCK!!! Lo and behold...THEY DID!! So I ordered a case (10 boxes of 20). Nice to see that Winchecter didn't abandone the few of us that shoot (nearly) obsolete guns. Now if they start producing some 25-20 and 32-20 to feed my old 92's, I'll be a happy camper. :)

And add .405 Win to that list of not to abandon please! My 1895 needs fed.

And now for a serious post: Seeing as this thread bridges the Obammy Jo Mammy and the Trump Administration, do you suppose the availability of the lesser popularity brass signals that the firearms industry has managed to make it past the famine/hoarding stage and get back to normal production??
