Old IMR 4227 load data

Postby MnHornet on Mon Dec 05, 2016 5:59 pm

I was gifted a couple pounds of DuPont IMR 4227.
It is my understanding this is not the same as the newer version or the H4227.
Does anyone have 357 load data for this older version of the powder?

Hodgdon Reloading site.

Pick cartridge.

Pick IMR.

Pick Powder 4227.

(I have more if you need it.)
The older Lyman #45 & #47 manuals have lots of data for this powder choice.

Hogdon should be able to help. I got some accurate 9s that is not available. A call to accurate got me starting loads. As I recall the simply said start 10% below 9.

Here's a post with some data from the early 70's, looks on the lower end of today's data but still within the range of most manuals. Just start low and work up as you always should.

I'm in the same boat as Oldman - got every major manual published since 70, and you're not a n00b so I'll just give you the data via your EM address - It's from the 1970 Lyman reloading manual (#45), and it has 38 Spl and 357 data

PM me...

The only caution I would have is that IMR 4227 was one of those powders that seemed to have a lot of lot to lot variability to it. I also recall reading somewhere that the burn rate changed sometime in the late 80's.

I used to use a bunch with 10 ga shotgun loads back in the old lead shot was legal days. I had more than a few failure to ignite loads, but that may have been because of a couple of other reasons... paper hulls and me being a real novice in those days.

My oldest Lyman book has no cover anymore, and no loads for 357Mag using IMR4227.

My Lyman 44th Edition, dated 1967,shows several:

146 grain half jacket, start 11.5, max 15.5
158 grain jacketed, start 11.5, max 15.0
160 grain half jacket, start 11.5 max 14.8

121 grain cast, start 9.5, max 15.5
141 grain cast, start 9.5, max 15.5
150 grain cast, start 9.5, max 15.5
158 grain cast, start 9.5, max 15.0
168 grain cast, start 9.5, max 14.5
195 grain cast, start 9.5, max 12.2

I have moulds and sizing dies for 168 grain and 195 grain cast bullets. The 168 is of Elmer Keith's design. The 195 was mostly used in 38 Spcl loadings. They both work great in 357 Mag when cast from wheel weights. The 168 design worked extremely well in a 357 Maximum loading when cast from Linotype material. Made a great load for IHMSA steel matches at 50, 100, 150, & 200 meters of life-sized steel animal targets. I shot it out of a Dan Wesson adjusted tight for barrel gap.

My Lyman 45 Edition, dated 1970, duplicates the 44 Edition loadings.

NOTE: These loadings are for powders dated before 1980. If newer powders are used, refer to newer manuals.

My 2 cans of IMR4227 powders are marked: "E90,SE20,L4113", and are marked $13.95 for cost if that dates them.
They are in great shape and are still sealed.

Thanks for all the replies.
My cans have very little info on them.
It looks like the lot number may be P80MY28A and has 4079 below that.
There is a picture of the DuPont handloader's guide on the can.
