Reloading for a 9mm caliber rifle

Postby p.o.p. on Mon Sep 23, 2019 8:22 am

I have purchased a CMMG Resolute rifle, 9mm caliber,16" barrel with a 1 in 10" twist rate. Can anybody suggest a good stating point for 115 gr. and 124gr. bullets. Would 147gr. bullets be impractical in a 16" barrel (loss of velocity)? Would full metal jacket or lead bullets have an advantage in a 16" barrel chambered for 9mm considering it's relatively small case capacity?
It seems lighter bullets (115 and 124 gr.) would be more practical for this firearm. Any help or comments?

IF you choose to use lead projectiles, you should use projectiles of 0.355-0.356"diameter to reduce or prevent hot gasses from jetting past and causing severe lead deposits in your barrel.

For FMJ or Plated projectiles, use a minimum of 0.3545" to 0.3555"diameter to minimize copper transfer to barrel inner surfaces.

Slugging your barrel to verify your bore specifications should be your first step. (and I wrote it last due to severe headache)

I would think going 147 subsonic would be very practical in this application with the addition of a can.

or even 165 grain FMJ from XTreme bullets. I love them in my AKV.

Most 9mm (I am assuming 9x19, and not some of the more esoteric hunting rounds) AR style rifles are straight blowback operated. Minimum loads are not your friends. Competition handgun loads that minimize felt recoil are likely to be iffy as far as reliably working the action.

I would use a slower powder (like AA#7) in a rifle load. The recoil is relatively minimal anyhow. A middle of the road load and adjust up or down based on accuracy and reliability.

All of the bullet weights you mention will work fine.

As these are not gas operated, lead or copper fouling is an issue only when accuracy suffers. I avoid cast bullets in long arms like this as they do tend to require more cleaning in the chamber area. FMJ are fine, no need for encapsulated or JHP unless you have a specific need for them, and flat nosed bullets (cast or JHP) can be tricky to feed in some guns.

Once you start loading for certain performance parameters you might want to go with heavier bullets and fast powders for subsonics or hollow points for small game/defensive use.

I would put a good taper crimp on them as they do sometimes take a beating while feeding, and COAL changes are an issue in a case with as little volume as 9x19...

Each gun is different. Start with good quality bullets and some ball powder and you should be fine. I like 231 for pistols but many others will work.

I just started loading for a longer barrel 9mm.
The sweet spot more muzzle energy and accuracy has been Power Pistol and AA7, with 124gn bullets.
Bullseye is OK for 147s, and Power Pistol has been good for 115s so far.
Highest velocity with the 124s has been with 7.7gn AA7, 5.3gn of power pistol is not as hot, but has been a little more accurate.
