Power Pistol for .38 sp

Postby Rodentman on Sat Mar 28, 2009 9:04 am

I bought Power Pistol to use in 9, 40, and 38. I have Speer 4211 JHP 158g bullets. I am using 4.9g of PP.

I can't find a specific listing for that combination, but it seems reasonable. My guns are +P rated and one is a .357. I am not after the hottest load, just something for range use. Next time I am buying SWC lead bullets though.

Do you think 4.9g is acceptable?

Thanks!

Sounds like a decent starting point to me. Only one way to find out though... go shoot some trial loads.

Here's what Speer 13 says for 158gr. bullets:

.38 Special: 4.8-5.4
.38 Special +P: 5.4-6.0

I think you'll be alright.

Speer 14 lists that same load, but it's for lead, not jacketed bullets. I've been told not to use JHP bullets with LSWC recipes.

So I guess that is part of my question.

Also, I surmise that 4.9 wouldn't be an overload since it's below +P in general.

I think that you will be ok

I just loaded some 357 Mags with PP just to check it out and see where we were with it. Sort of a light 357 Mag load just for the heck of it.

PP is slow enough that I am not concerned with it all too much.

Thank you for the replies. I'm not worried about loads to the nearest .1g or match shooting. I just don't want a KB and I'm new at this. I have a Myman 1200 scale which is handy but I don't think it is totally consistent.

I'd get some Bullseye or Eunuch powder for the .38 if I could find the stinking stuff anywhere!

As I said, I'm just starting...

For just starting, you've got a pretty nice setup!

It is a nice setup, but you do know that Randy Moss doesn't play for the queens anymore right? if you'd like I can get you some Packers stuff to replace those outdated pics for you.

That sure is a pretty set up. Keep the vikings picture. Since Bret left the pack, they ain't worth watching. IMO.

The photos in the basement are all my son's. He's moved out now. I think. I don't know Randy Moss from Sterlilng Moss so I don't pay much attention to that stuff. We DO have a signed and framed Chris Carter jersey hanging in the hallway though.

I put stain on the front of the top workbench shelf so it doesn't look white anymore.

Now all I need are some:

Small pistol primers
LSWC bullets
Extra brass

Hard to find....

Google Missouri Bullets if you want some lead bullets! Fast service and you can give the postman/woman a work out!

If that's a flourecent light I see on the back of the table ditch it. That WILL reduce consistent measurements on a digital scale.

Yeah it's a folded up fluorescent but I don't use it when using the scale. You are quite right it's mighty sensitive but it appears to work OK. I check it with the balance scale and it's very close. Maybe I should worry about 0.1 g but I don't think you can get the weight always to the exact tenth.

I'd like to give the postperson a workout with SP primers....

If you get primers via USPS you will be in a lot of trouble and the person that sent them in even more trouble! They can only go Fedex or UPS.
