Broke my Dillon

Postby JoeH on Sat Mar 28, 2009 4:14 pm

I was doing a little loading yesterday. As I was returning the handle to the upright/seat the primer position, the handle stopped short. There was something wrong.

The first thing that I noticed is that the primer tube was leaning back towards me at an angle.

In inspecting the press I noticed that the frame was cracked. I lightly pressed the primer tube back in place and the frame broke. The primer assy fell off (held by the spring).

Dillon will fix it but I'll be down for about a month. I need to load about 2000 rounds to make it through. This sucks!

I spoke to them yesterday after it happened. Ship them the press, two week turn, shipping back to me. I figure about 4 weeks.

Man, that's a bummer...and surprising to hear. At least they stand behind their products.

What model of press?

Any estimate of the number of rounds loaded?

I've loaded over 50,000 rounds of 45 ACP, 10,000 of 9 mm, several 1,000 308 & 223 in my Dillon 650 with only a minor part breaking.
Because I care, I carry.

Time to pull out the rock chucker and 10 hours

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Looks like you might want to pick up an extra Dillon.

What I try to do on a Vickers count stage is use my sights and that way I can keep my round count down. :P :P :P

Update:

John at Gunstop offered to send the press to Dillon for me. That was really nice since it's a 15 pound shipment. Hopefully Dillon will turn it around quickly.

I should never have gotten behind on my loading

That's what you get for supporting local vendors! Try that with some other vendors!

Joe, for clarification, ( I was going to ask you at lunch, but was too occupied shoving food in my pie hole) what exactly broke? is it just the greyish Die cast primer part, or the blue casting which is the whole frame for the machine?

It's the blue casting that broke. The frame needs to be replaced.

The area that broke off is where the primer assembly attaches to the press with two screws. The primer assembly came off of the press without removing those screws. Not good.

I spoke to Dillon yesterday. The official word, "They're still workin' on it."

These pics were taken with my phone. So, they aren't great but you can see the problem.

Man,
That is strange no pressure place for a fracture of the casting. Looks you just need a new frame and you would be good to go. But, Dillon are good people so you should be up and running soon.....fingers crossed! I have seen the crank break on the back side away from the operator (the thing that hand inserts into). The only thing primer related was I know someone that stripped the threads of the Primer Shield / Housing.
