Discuss all of the great hunting opportunities in Minnesota

I plugged my first deer ever on Sunday morning about 9:30. It was a good size doe that I hit once with my 357 Marlin right behind the left shoulder, through the top of the hart and aorta and out the right shoulder breaking it in two. She got about 15 yards and dropped. I field dressed with good supervision of my father-in-law who got one on Saturday. Butchering starts tomorrow... so I will know all the steps from start to finish. Now I just need recipes for venison.

hot skillet, olive oil, butter, garlic, onions, 3/4" thick chunks of bambi - saute to your preferred doneness - chow down!

first batch is traditionally the soaz muscle from the chest cavity - aka mock tenderloin - we generally fry that up as we are quartering the rest and take a snack break once it's ready! (Monday we also added a chunk from the real tenderloin too! YUM!)

grab a roast (like the big shoulder - football-looking hunk from the inside of the hind quarter), sear it good on all sides and then throw it into the crockpot with some carrots, onions, celery, garlic, fresh ground pepper, spuds... sometimes I put a couple orange slices on top of the roast to help tenderize and give it just a slight flavor variation from the usual to make people wonder what it is! (or lemon or lime). can also do the old lipton onion soup mix trick to season a roast.

dice up a hunk and brown it slightly, then make a nice fiery batch of chili with it.

take a hunk of tenderloin and wrap some Neuskes applewood bacon around it, toss it on the grill and cook to medium, FEAST.

or just take your favorite beef recipe and use bambi instead - I haven't found any that I don'tlike yet! ;)

Had a great first time.

Sat afternoon, I got a signal from Nyffman, who was across the woods from us, letting us know he saw 2 does headed my way. about 15 mins later, Jay was over at my stand to get some rope. I spotted a flash of white down a row of trees. It was the 2 does. We spread out to stalk them. Then Jay spotted one of the does down the trees and signaled me. I set up in the next row to take a shot incase he missed. He didn't. Great shot. about 130 yards, right through the neck.

Not too long after that, we heard a shot. Called SAM, and he had gotten a button buck.

Just as it was getting dark, we started to head in. Jay and I figured we would try to push towards Nyff and Sam. As we were doing that. We heard 3-4 shots. SAM had seen a heard of deer, and managed to nab this one:

We packed in for the day...

Sunday morning there was very little activity. No sightings, and we could not hear as many shots around us compared to the day before. It was a bit rainy. Jay and I once again went to stirr up the woods. We spotted a decent buck in the distacne. Too far and to much foliage for a clear shot. He went running towards Nyffman. I got on the phone to check if he saw him... No answer... About 10 seconds later, I hear a Crack from Nyff's 44. Followed by 2 shotgun booms. We ran over to see SAM and Nyff together, and no deer. They had thought they missed. We spread out looking for blood, and didn't see anything. We talked for a bit and had planned on heading out for an early lunch.

On the way back to his stand, Nyff spotted a small amount of blood. Just a few drops... I saw some fresh tracks... Jay and I went in that direction, and SAM and Nyff looked for more blood. SAM yelled out, "Get your guns ready, he could pop out"... I got about 100 feet and heard some rustling in the brush. Then I saw the buck look back at me, and try to get up. I took him out with a neck shot. Sam had got him in the back.

I had a blast, and am hoping to get some good results this weekend too! Thanks SAM (and Mrs. SAM), NYFF, and Jay.

There has been some discussion lately about overkill for rifle calibers used for deer hunting, and the potential of wasted meat. Here are a few pictures of the small buck my Dad took opening morning. He was using a 7 mag and shot the deer at an angle while on the run from approximately 120 yards. The pictures show the entrance wound which was approximately 11 inches long and broke through about six ribs.

I like the two small holes my 357 out of a rifle made. Lots of wasted meat there.

Would that be the result of the angle of impact? I'd believe that many calibers would do that.

I will say that the .270 up close does a lot more meat damage than my 30-30s usually do. Of course, had I not hit the far shoulder on the way out, it would just be rib damage, but you're supposed to shoot at the far shoulder......

Yes... That's why it broke through so many ribs. Just some interesting pictures I thought I'd share.

Saw a nice doe at 6:50 on Saturday but decided to pass on the shot, as I typically see lots of deer out of my stand. After not seeing any more deer on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, it was beginning to look like a bad decision. However, my luck turned a little bit on Tuesday. While I was sitting in one of my cousin's stands on Tuesday evening, this one came sneaking up the trail, right into my crosshairs....

congrats sirs

I got skunked, we found gut piles saturday morning, did not find our deer/trail cams, but my nephew shot this one late saturday evening just as legal hours were ending. It broke a 0 fer 5 streak for him so he was happy camper.

My son in law and I hunted for 7 days on our land. I saw one buck but couldn't get a clean shot so I passed, same for the SIL.

There didn't seem to be as many deer this year. On Thursday night (11/12) one of my grandsons came up. He went out the following morning and sat for a whole 20 minutes and then shot this 8 point buck. Made it look easy.
