Too many questions and too little time, would be far better and more entertaining over a beer...............with a good cigar.......

Den hunting - denning is generally in the spring when they have pups. Other times they will stay in the area, but rarely use the den, and depending on density of population, usually in MN I have found that is within a 4-6 square mile area for a breeding pair. That is not to say that there are not overlaps in territories, as well as usually the younger Yotes less that 1 year will generally stay within that territory too. Usually in the spring is about the time that I quit hunting, just to let next years targets survive with both parents.

Calling - usually calling for me is about 30 minutes per set-up. If there is no action or calling back and something does not start within that period, they may not be in that area until later in the day. I will move about a section or two to the next set up, as it takes time to get from the vehicle to the set-up spot, usually about 30-45 minutes. It is not usually good to go to an area that you have not previously scouted, mapped, and located animals on other trips, however yes you can often get help from locals or farmers to give you a jump and area to start.

Permission - I have a standard permission form that I fill out and both the land owner and I retain a copy. It has my name, address, phoe, vehicle description and a release of liability clause for the landowner. If you get permission and go onto a landowners property and are successful, later at some point he will "recommend" you to his neighbours. But getting that first time permission is sometimes difficult. I clearly tell them that I am only there to hunt varmints and that I will leave his property in exactly the way I found it or better. I carry a pack with a bunch of stuff in it and one year a landowner said that I could hunt only in the back section. So I honoured his request and on the way out I found a fence gate that had fallen apart. Well after calling for a while I ended up shooting two Coyotes and on the way back fixed his fence. Two months later I called him and asked if I could come back, he approved. Well I go to their homestead about 0430 and he and his wife were up. He invited me in and we had frech made apple pie and coffee. During the course of conversation he commented on the two Coyotes, then asked if I had fixed the fence. I told him that I did. Well long story short, here it is 10 years later, I get to hunt on about 15 farmsteads in the area, beause he told his neighbors and they invited me down to hunt Coyotes on their land.

Geeze, enough for now..........and goalie, I don't know for a fact that they can see your finger at 600 yds or even 300, but I do know that with flashing skin accidentally by taking my gloves off at the wrong time that I spooked one at 200 yds....

Remember, skunks and other such rodents and scavangers eat that crap too..........bobcats prefer live, warm meat as they are not scavengers....... ;)

Yeah, there's lots of 'vibe' about bobcats up there in the bar, but I ain't seen paw prints from one yet.

They grade the dirt roads around the woods we hunt every week during deer season, so you can track what's been happening (I'm sure that's not their intent - it just works out like that). The result is usually a pretty soft top coat of dirt on the road, so the animals don't need to weigh all that much to make impressions.

The gravel pit by my cabin has had more paw prints in it, and might be an even better location due to the ability to draw them into a gully type environment and ambush them from above. The close proximity to modern conveniences is also appealing for going there rather than the buddy's land (his cabin is closed up for winter - ours is heated year round).

We very well may end up there for Christmas, so it could be an option to get one or two of you experienced folks to come join us for the day. Our place is about 15 miles south east of brainerd.

I sight in up there every fall and try to shoot a couple times a year over the summer as well. The neighbors will most likely come join in when shooting than cause trouble or complain. They had a whole paintball battle field set up in it last year - too bad none of them had any clue about fortifying positions.

Fleet Farm carries the vet wrap.

I used Vetwrap on my lever rifle for deer hunting. Best part was, $1.75 per roll, and it will do the entire rifle. Also don't be afraid of their generic brand vet wrap as it works just as well. I wanted to cut the glare from the stainless, and also protect my precious from scratches. Worked great, came off clean, and the stuff is surprisingly resilient to tears.

Yep, got mine at Fleet Farm also. This stuff has almost as many uses as duct tape.

word of caution on "vet wrap" and your point of aim.

IF you are wrapping the forearm and barrel, if you wrap it too tight, you can and will change your point of aim and point of impact. Especially if you have a barrel that is free floated from the stock.

My rifle never got wet, so not real sure. I also put a coat of wax on my stock, and as always keep a little oil on the metal, before applying the vetwrap, just to be safe. The wrap is sort of a rubbery cloth, so the material doesnt absorb moisture, but it is permeable. If my gun got wet, I'd unwrap it and make sure its dry just to be safe.

It sticks to itself so unwrapping and re-wrapping is no big deal. Very interesting stuff.

Been using vet wrap to cushion radio gear and hold everything in place in RC planes, boats and trucks for years. Awesome stuff.

Any of you ever call in a black bear or two when calling for dogs? That's happened to me twice in the Chengwatana up in Pine City. Since I'm on the ground and using a squeaker (not a remote call) it's a bit unnerving to see a couple hundred pounds of bear running full throttle towards you and the call.

I was just curious if that's ever happened to anyone else here.
