Who hunts ? and what ?

Postby 1911fan on Sun Jul 29, 2007 12:45 am

Who here hunts?

Are you just a shooter with a carry permit?

Do you hunt, if so, what flavors?

Waterfowl, Upland, Deer, varmint, Bear Moose? other Big game?

If you do hunt, where do you hunt, private land, public, leased etc. lets sorta build a data base of active hunters here.

I will go first. I would hunt everything. Economics have pressed me to limit it more to Deer, Upland game, (grouse, rabbit, and pheasant) as well as some Varmint Hunting. When I pull that winnig lotto powerball ticket, I will go Elk hunting, moose and bear hunting again. (kids sorta suck the money out of your hunting budget)

Hunted deer with a XI bow until my daughter came along. Now that she is at an age that I could start again, I have another on the way.

I'm not complaining, the deer can wait. I'll take the time with the kids. :D

I prefer jackalopes myself! :D But this does sound like a good hunting camp story!

Go ahead Uncle 1911 and tell us about the time you saw the Bear Moose face to face! ;)

As for hunting, I've done mainly Upland, but haven't hunted since I moved away from my home territory, in ND, many years ago. Lack of local ties mainly.

I use to hunt more years ago, in fact it was the only prenup that I had when I got married.

Deer - Minnesota, Wisconsin, and use to in Idaho
Elk - Use to in Idaho
Pheasant - Minnesota and South Dakota
Grouse - Minnesota
Prairie Dogs - South Dakota (not really hunting, more like tartget practice with reactionary targets.)
Turkey - Minnesota - Off and on, I forgot to register again this year.
Fox & Yote - Again, use to do it several times a year

My father use to hunt waterfowl all the time. I don't at all now, just don't really care for the taste, so I stick with the pheasant and grouse.

Hunt: nothing yet but I have this new Winchester 70 .270 I need to figure out.
I'd like to get into Deer and Pheasant / Grouse but need to get the equipment and experience together which takes time and luck it seems.
private or small grou permit classes available

These days all I hunt are deer and small game (Grouse and rabbits).
I hunt deer with Bow and Handgun. I rarely even take a rifle with me anymore.
I hunt on private land (Owned by our family) that butts up to many thousands of acres of state land that is only accessable through private land on the west side. The nearest public access is eight miles east with a swamp between so our side is basically all ours. It's rare to see another hunter while out there in the state land and when you do, it's usually someone you know.

This year our land has changed DNR status from "Managed" to "Intensive" so the deer limit has gone up to five deer per season. I usually try for two which is enough for me. We do eat a lot of venison.

As far as equipment, many years ago when money was very tight, I used a Stevens single shot 12 guage that I bought for $25 from a neighbor that was in very good condition. Then it cost me another $20 to have Ahlmans cut the barrel back from full choke to about improved cylinder and remount the front bead. At that time I thought the choke change was maybe a waste of money, but I had it done anyway. I still have that gun and it has taken alot of grouse and I still get it out once in awhile to hunt or shoot clays with, or use it in DNR Firearm Safety classes. So you don't need to spend big bucks on equipment to get out and hunt upland game, and there is state land around for you check out.

Usually my dad and I just drive to southwestern Minnesota walk all the little public areas around waterholes looking for pheasant. There are so many, and they are generally so small, that you can walk quite a few places each day. We actually have pretty good luck and get some shots in.

Hunting

I think that we should plan a hunt for Opener this year about 10 of us or so -

do the Camp Out thing and them go into the woods At first light and go after them.

Could be fun.

I spend most of my time in the woods bow hunting deer. Nice long season and I absolutely love the up close and personal nature of it. But I do go up north to our cabin for the firearms season too. I turkey hunt and do some pheasant hunting on occasion. I've shot a few prairie dogs with Cobb and also go up to his cabin grouse hunting with him once a year. There are a few ruffed and sharpies around our cabin too but I just wish it wasn't such a long drive. I'd love to do more grouse hunting....
