Big Deer report

Postby Ramoel on Mon Nov 12, 2007 1:13 pm

My son in-law got a nice doe and a 10 point buck on opening weekend up on our land. The buck weighed 211 pounds after it was field dressed. They weighed it at the place where he took it to be processed. They said it was the biggest they had seen so far this season.

I on the other hand was skunked this year. I did have a bear walk right past my stand without ever noticing me. I also had a Chickadee sit on my arm and look at me for awhile. All in all it was a good season with decent weather. We were up there for 9 days. I didn't hunt all that hard but still had a lot of fun. My grandson was skunked too but he was only up for a couple of days.

Nice deer. It'll look even better on the plate next to the biscuit and gravy......

Better luck than I had so far.

My buck is nocturnal, but maybe his habits will change when muzzleloader season rolls around.

This is his picture working his scrape in my yard, under an apple tree about 100 feet from my bedroom window. The scrape and apple tree are hidden behind some pines, so I can't actually see the scrape from the house.

There was a big buck (they said 20 points) shot in Spring Valley MN last week. I saw a photo of it on someone's camera phone, and thought that it would be on the Internet by the time I got home. Either it's not, or I'm not using the right search terms.

I got a little buck on Thursday night. I'm not a trophy hunter - just looking for meat through the winter.

Don't know what sort of report anyone else has, but we didn't hear many shots fired, and we didn't see that many deer - especially since the DNR tagged that area "intensive harvest". Wonder if the price of ammunition and/or price of gas is keeping folks from hunting this year.

That's a nice deer Ramoel. I shot a young 8 pointer this year and my son also shot a young fork-horn. We only hunted the weekend so I could get my son back to school. I saw more young bucks this year than I ever have before. I even caught a glimpse of two bucks fighting and chasing through the brush. This picture of a dandy buck was sent to me by email. Supposedly taken near LeCenter, MN.

A Moultrie I40.

The link is here - http://www.moultriefeeders.com/Game-Spy-I40

Infrared, so no flash for them to see, just a soft red glow that doesn't illuminate the area. I have is set on multi shot for 3 pictures, so it take 3 pictures at something like 15 second intervals and shuts down for I think 30 seconds. I have a picture of a doe with her head down, the second picture the doe is looking at the camera and the third picture is of her chest at very close range. She must have wondered what that red glow was and walked up to the camera to check it out. I do not know if a flash scares the deer or not, but I have several 3 picture series where the deer is looking at the camera during the second picture and ignoring it on the third, so I don't believe that the infrared has any effect on them.

I do not know if a flash scares the deer or not,

I have watched deer while my trail cam has taken pictures of them with the normal flash while near dark and it doesn't seem to bother them too much. It certainly doesn't cause them to high-tail it out of the county.

I got nothing for the second year in a row and I'm pretty much over it.

Here's how I see it:

-If I want to get out and enjoy nature, I'll go for a walk.

-If I want to shoot some guns, I'll go to the range.

-If I want a nice steak, I'll go to Cub Foods.

-If I want to freeze my ass off, I'll go outside in my underwear.

Deer hunting sucks!
