It looks like we'll be leaving Sunday after church for a couple of days.

You're hunting Isanti? I'm not real familiar with the area but I think you need to go further North to find 'em. At the very least your odds will increase if you do.

When you see all the trees have their fall colors, you're getting warm!

I live in Princeton just west of Isanti, and can tell you that you are wasting time chasing grouse around here. A pheasant or two maybe, but no ruffies. Get north of Hwy23 and you have a chance, north of MilleLacs and you are in the beginning of prime territory. If you like long walks in the park, feel free to spend time around here.

Well, the second time was actually in Otsego. No birds there either apparently. I'm real new to hunting so please forgive my ignorance. I'm really hoping to find somewhere pretty close by to hunt. I'd rather get to go out more often (and I DO like walking in the woods!) rather than have to wait for the weekend and drive a couple hours. I understand I might not get as much, but it's still fun.

No problem. That's why it's called 'hunting', and not 'catching'.

That's what makes hunting grouse tough; you've got some driving to do unless you live way up north. Also, the foliage this time of year makes it tougher, peroid. Most those birds I said I saw but I didn't have a shot at, I actually only heard, didn't see.

Keep it up. Head north if you want grouse. Study their habitat so you know what you're looking for. Pavement and tall grass or fields, bad. Gravel roads and trails surrounded by woods, good. Your determination is admirable but you've got a couple of hours of driving if you're gonna do it. Think road trip.

I would reccomen if you want grouse, head up 65, and get north of Mora. Solona State forest is a good place to start. Look for aspen stands from 5-30 yrs old and you will find birds.
