MN Pheastant Hunting

Discuss all of the great hunting opportunities in Minnesota

MN Pheastant Hunting

Postby Joe Camo on Sat Sep 18, 2010 11:58 am

Well, most of the guys I've hunted pheasants with over the years now prefer to sit in deer stands rather than walk fields all day since they've gotten older.

For those chasing pheasants in MN, does anyone mind if an extra shotgun or two (me and maybe my nephew) tag along on a some hunts this year?

Well I don't have any trips planned yet. I live in the western suburbs and am trying to find some good local land to hunt this year. I will let you know if something comes up.

I've got a great pair of pointers but don't know of any local land to hunt. Locally I stick to game farms and hunt South and North Dakota for wild birds. But if someoen knew a place locally I'd provide the dogs.

Only rule is you shoot the dog the vet bills and/or replacement cost comes out of your estate, which will be in probate a few seconds after you shoot the dog.

Which is the exact reason I don't hunt with people I don't know. Sorry just don't cut it when your pulling shot out of your hide or your dog. I'm Not making any judgments. Just sayin.

I started laughing as soon as I saw the post title:

"MN Pheasant Hunting"

It's like

"Saskatchewan shark hunting"

I just thank the almighty I have connections in Nodak that produce pheasants like biblical plagues.

Sorry, to get the hook-up you gotta marry in. ;)

However, if someone ever needs an extra two guys with their own bird dog to properly work a field, me and my buddy can help you out... :D We're in the south metro area!

Hey now. I've hunted pheasants in MN my entire life and it ain't that bad. You just gotta have a general idea where to look.

Hunting pheasants in NoDak is like fishing in your gold fish bowl. :P

Get west of 94 and you'll find a few. Get west of 23 and you are in the real decent habitat. After the 1st of Dec. limits go up and we do as well in MN as we do within an hour west of the MN/SoDak border. Now if you are comparing MN to Chamberlian area, discussion is over. Roadside counts around Chamerlian were about 17 birds per mile. Highest densities in MN are around 6-7 per mile.

I think you meant take 94 west about 7-8 hours. ;)

And i'm sure this was supposed to be "west of 29" :D

Is this the same SoDak that has to buy birds from MN game farms to feed the appitite of the industry for "wild Birds"?

Glad someone else said it. The difference between Dakota birds and game farm birds is drive time and cost per each.

If you want to make the drive to Alexandria I have thousands of acres of WMA's that provide good pheasant hunting within just a few miles of town. I may not be able to shoulder a gun as of yet, but I'm supposed to walk as much as possible. If you have a dog-------------------I'll take you out.

Well it was a great weekend for us, Saturday was pretty windy 15+MPH gusts and the birds were hookin and bookin, switched to 3" 4 shot rounds and caught up to them a little better.

On a related note, anyone else wish you could shoot them with 17's, I have a little Mach2 that is VERY accurate, while I do love the chase I love taking a few with the 22, it preserves the meat a bit better when you take them with a head shot, the 17 would extend my range a bit for doing such a thing.

Nice birds:) I've never pheasant hunted before but I can't imagine they'd be easy to take with a 22? I could see hunting Grouse with a 22, but don't Pheasant run like crazy? I'm gonna go for the first time this weekend. No dog though which is gonna make it very tough I've heard, but I'm willing to put in the extra work. Honestly I'd be happy just to flush a few!
