Are you sure about 1974? The only date I can find is December 31 1979. I've looked through the hunting and trapping regulations and the website and this is the earliest date I can find for a requirement. I only ask because I was born in 1977 and I was thinking about hunting with a friend two years ago and I thought I was fine.

It's 1979. Belgiboy erred in his statement.

However, that being said, I would recommend that any new hunter go through FAS, regardless of when they were born. An added bonus of doing so is that most states now require proof of completion for non-resident big game licenses.

Cool that's what I thought. Yes I am aware of the out of state non resident issue, Iowa requires this. It wouldn't be my first time hunting, just my first time hunting in Minnesota.

Most states have reciprocity when it comes to recognizing FAS, so if you completed it in Iowa, it would be a non-issue here. Just provide a copy of your certificate of completion, and you're GTG.

Firefighter--I will put your name on the list for 2011 deer season. This year my son-in-law, my son and his friend and some old guy are already hunting. They will always hunt. Next year Strad is joining us and if we find room--you are welcome to join us as well. ;)

Thank you very much for your invite. You are the first to offer an invite to a rookie hunter. Are you sure you are willing to take a true rookie with you veteran hunters. I really don't know much about it except to be silent, pull your own weight, etc... I am completey capable of doing that. Well that will give me sometime to get some gear together with the after hunting season clearence items. Saw some good lists of gear on here-what would you resommend to the rookie-me- to pick up? Where do you go hunting? You can PM me if you don't want to give up your spot and I will not tell. How long are your hunting trips as well? once again I greatly appreciate your offer to take me with you next year. You will have to remind me about it.

You will need a shotgun and slugs--blaze orange--warm boots--a very good knife. You're set! We hunt very close to my home in Alexandria (4-5 miles). Everyone stays at my house and we hunt first and second weekend. Last year we all had a deer by 8:00 Sunday A.M. of the first weekend. We were ALL rookies once. ;)

I don't own a shotgun to hunt with and don't know if I will be able to afford one. Don't want to get one and then not go again or on the off cance of not enjoying it. Just want to tag along or use an extra one maybe. Not much experience with a shotgun. Once again thank you for the invite.

Awesome. I do want to hunt just don't have a hunting firearm is all. That would be great if I could borrow one from you-just not very experienced with a shotgun is all(being honest). I'm not trying to talk myself out of going by any means or I woul not have posted this? Once again thank you for your offers.

If your interested in deer hunting get in touch with me sometime. I will likely be doing a hunt in Cherry MN and could potentially add you on with my group. Call me if you have interest. We are pretty serious hunters...alcohol is not a priority at our camp. Rest and hunting is what we do. Everyone pitches in for gas and food for the trip. Generally hunt a long weekend...thurs - sun.
