Do we have feral pigs in Minnesota?

It seems reasonable that there would be. Some of the biggest populations found in WI have been in the St Croix, and Miss. River valleys, and they are reported to be excellent swimmers. The environments on both side of those rivers is similar; mixed ag/ woods/ wetlands. But the species that's a problem in WI doesn't seem to be much reported in MN.

This feral pig was shot last fall near Big Stone Lake.

Mn-DNR is worried about a herds near the South Dakota and along the Wisconsin/Iowa borders,
but it turns out the law is pretty fuzzy about what the Department of Natural Resources can do about them.

That's because the pigs, though roaming wild, are considered domestic animals and not wildlife.

"There aren't clear laws and policies to deal with this kind of thing," said Ed Boggess, deputy director
of the DNR's Fish and Wildlife Division. The DNR is considering drafting legislation that would more
clearly allow it to deal with feral pigs.

I watched a show on cable a while back, I think it was called "The Pig Bomb," or something like that. Filmed down south, mostly.

There are tens of thousands of them, they make a hell of a mess, and they aren't very friendly.

I hope they don't start showing up here in MN, nothing good can come of it. If they do show up with any number I would expect MN would institute a costly removal program like Kansas.

You Might want to look into MI for hogs. I think there are not only feral hogs, but some Russian Boar that are free range.

Spent some time a fews yrs back chasing 'reports' of these critters in western WI. We never actually SAW any. But, I'm willing to give it a go again. This just sounds like too much fun.

There is an outfit in GA that does guided night hunts with AR10's decked out with high end FLIR nightvison scopes, looks like a blast, wish I had the bank to go out with them!

I asked about this about a year ago in this thread, but all I heard was that it's tough to get hunting permission on the land in WI where the pigs are, and that they are hard to find.

I would LOVE to get a crack at hunting them though..., all up close with a shotgun and a 45....and making sure I have good footware and in shape.

Don't understand why you would need permits/liscense etc. to hunt them. They are non-native to the U.S. as a whole according to the experts on the history channels show. They do absolutely no good to domestic animals (including deer etc.), have no natural predators (although the pythons overtaking the everglades could take one), and are dangerous to even humans. Being a non-native species, I say its time to make 'em gone before things get much worse.

Yeah, they'll never get rid of them if they insist people purchase a license to shoot them. Just like the Florida reptiles, they'll be around indefinately, and some people will keep buying licenses to shoot them ...
