or you can start feeding the deer regularly, in the same spot, all the time.

then when you "hunt" you can just bag whichever one or two you want as it eats breakfast.

this is "hunting" to some "hunters". So inquire as to the methods of the guys you may or may not go along with. If I was to be taken on this kind of a hunt, I'd be sorely disappointed if I was expecting the real thing. YMMV.

Of course feeding the deer within (I think) 2 weeks of hunting them is illegal in Minnesota, unless it's just mineral, or you planted stuff instead of pouring grain on the ground.

Not to say that it doesn't happen...

I personally would not walk around the woods on the first weekend of deer hunting. I stand hunt and has produced good results but you need to find a few deer trails that come together. I named my stand "Cross Roads" for good reason with 3 good shooting lanes one out to 70 yards the rest up to 50 yards. I have been very successful with my location.

Last hunting season I did some walking around to warm up and jumped 3 but no good shots. I may have to setup a ground blind near that spot.

Bait needs to be completely removed within 10 days of an open season.

They eliminated the bird feeder exemption last year so don't be cute about it either.

Actually there is no such requirement. The requirements are:

Hunters are not allowed to use or hunt over bait or feed or hunt in
the vicinity of bait or feed if the hunter knows about or has reason
to know about the placement of the bait or feed.

An area is considered baited for 10 days after complete removal of
the bait or feed.

Which leads a reasonable person to believe that bait needs to be removed if not completely consumed before hunting a site. Since they don't tell you what the vicinity standard means - I'm not taking any chances.

Don't cry to me when you get your gun taken away for breaking the rules.

Btw, I asked the DNR when the regs would be available, and they'll be online Aug 1st.

What he was pointing out, fj, was that a person who isnt going to hunt opener can remove his feeder later than 10 days prior to opener. Its when you hunt that matters, not when the season starts.

I won't get my gun taken away. I don't bait. Nor does anyone I hunt with. We all grew up in the area that we hunt, and many of the party still lives up there, so we have ample opportunity before the season to scout the area, find where the deer are moving, and set up our stands accordingly.

ETA: Norsesmithy hit my point right on the head. As long as you don't hunt the area until the 11th day after the bait is gone, it doesn't matter when you remove the bait. If your season is long enough, you can wait until opening day to remove the bait.

Well, one of my bow hunting buddies wants to bait a spot for himself, and being as I'm already on a first name basis with my CO, I'm a little cautious about it.

So much so, I haven't given him permission to do it yet; and likely wont.

what i like to do and i think you should do also is do some research find out where you want to hunt then spend a lot of time exploring the area finding tracks beds etc. then get a gameplan together with whoever your going hunting with because you both need to know exactly whats going on at all times and you need to know where eachother are so you dont accidentally kill one another and a few weeks before hunting season ill go out to the area i hunt for 3 or 4 days scouting new places to hunt i will literally go knock on peoples doors and ask permission to set up a stand on there land and if you do that make sure they know ur there everytime u go on their land.this has actually paid off for me and my brother more than once we have this one really nice little old lady who lets us hunt her land in exchange for a little bit of yard work or whatever and she gets more excited than us when we take a deer from her land because she says they keep eating up her garden. her place is a last resort because its like shooting fish in a bucket her land is infested so we usually leave it for the last week if we havent got any deer yet because we enjoy hunting new places and the challenges that come with it. be careful though u can get lost easily ive done it more than once most notably last year i was lost until about 2am when my bro came ripping by on his wheeler and found me. come to find out i was only about 30 feet off the path we took in but i had been walking in the dark with no flashlight and had no clue where i was
