Grouse hunting

Did anyone else get out this weekend? I ran my setters in the rain for about 3 hours Sunday and they had 13 solid points on grouse and another half dozen woodcock (I don't shoot them even during the season in most cases) , I was able to bag two birds. This morning I hunted about 2.5 hours and had 4 birds solidly pointed, none of which I could get a clear shot at. Just curious how other people did.....

I always get a kick out of the guys "hunting" from 4-wheelers and trucks.....I can't imagine how many grouse they drive right by.... these types of "hunters" were out in droves.

My dogs only ever hot going on woodcock, and never did flush a grouse. But I took one driving out from one of my spots. Three were sitting on the side of the trail, stopped the truck grabbed the gun stepped out a couple steps and took one. What area of the state were you hunting?

I was around the Hill City area, how about you? Woodcock sure are fun for pointing dogs.....I just can't figure out a way to make them taste remotely decent

Ok, I was SE of McGregor. Not a real rosy outlook, Usually on the same walk I did this weekend i flush at least 5-10.

But I am headed up to Bemidji this weekend to hit them hard. we may take a side trip up to TRF to whack on a couple sharpies. My buddy took three of them on Sat.

I just can't figure out a way to make them taste remotely decent

A few spoon fulls of olive oil in a cast iron pan over high heat. Drop in fresh crushed garlic followed by the woodcock breasts seasoned with sea salt and cracked pepper. Sear them one minute on each side like a medium-rare steak.

I have only cooked it this way once a long time ago and it is very very good. They are like waterfowl, you can't over cook them. Now I just need to get out and start shooting some more upland game

If you'll eat woodcock, I'll bag some for you this year. Just promise me you'll take and eat them.....I find the taste much worse than ducks....something like liver

That, I think is going to change. I will probably be going shooting honkies the first week in Oct. instead of the second weekend.

Just take me out hunting and I'll attempt to bag some Like I said I haven't done a whole helluva lot of upland bird hunting in a few years. Besides when JJ took me hunting last year

So did the rule stating you had to be a minimum of 20yds (or something like that) from a motor vehicle before taking game finally get struck out of the regs? Or did you just take really BIG steps?

Can't shoot from a vehicle or OHV, and you cannot shoot from the right of way.

Perfectly legal to stop the vehicle, load, step out and shoot. Taken lots of grouse coming and going from my spots. I'm not cruising around all day road hunting, but I will road hunt in and out of where I park, with the shotgun on the center console, unloaded.

Unless transporting under the exceptions listed below, a person may
not transport a firearm, including a handgun, in or on a motor vehicle
unless the firearm
is:
• unloaded* and in a case made expressly for that purpose;
• unloaded* and in the closed trunk of a motor vehicle; or
• carried under a valid permit to carry a pistol or handgun.
Under the following circumstances, a person may transport
unloaded, uncased firearms (excluding pistols) in a motor vehicle,
including ATVs:
• while at a shooting range with permission
• while lawfully hunting on private or public land or while travelling
to or from a site the person intends to hunt or has lawfully hunted
that day.Firearms must be transported unloaded and cased:
• within Anoka, Hennepin, or Ramsey counties.
• within the boundaries of a home rule, charter, or statutory city with
a population of 2,500 or more.
• on school grounds
• as otherwise restricted in game refuges, shining or night vision laws.

I do the same. I walk my ass off all day but if I see some run into the ditch during my drive in or out you better believe I'm getting out to jump and shoot them and get some shots off.....

My grandpa told me to throw the woodcock into a pot with my boot, let it simmer for 2 hours...then throw away the woodcock and eat the boot.
