Using hunting loads/bullets in any rounds within 200 yds shouldn't have any issues with deer. Just don't use mil surp rounds to hunt. One of my AKs have 20inch heavy barrel and very accurate to 300 yds (if not a little more) and I have been contemplating hunting with it, but I have a dedicated hunting rifle that wouldn't be used if not for hunting.

I killed my first deer with an SKS, one shot, dropped in it's tracks at about 150yds. I used Federal 123gr Hi-shok ammo. I still have the remainder of that box of ammo, the price tag says $4.99!

I'm guessing that was awhile ago -- back when the SKS's were $69 each? ;)

My only other concern is someone said something about a magazine limit for deer hunting. Is there such a thing?

Although I don't really see the need for more than a few rounds, if the mag limit is five, and all I own are ten and thirty rounders, I could see getting in some kind of trouble.

Two things I do NOT want for my first deer hunting outing: getting shot, and getting in trouble.

No mag limit in Mn, Other states do have mag limits.

There are SP options for 7.62x39. I'm iong to be looking into it myself. Hopefully, next year I will be using the SKS for a little hunting. Keep us posted on the ammo you find.

The 20 and 30 rounders are heavy, rattle like hell, and make great brush hooks. Get a couple 5 rounders.

Yeah, for hunting, I would pick up a 5 rounder. I have a couple that came with 2 of my Arsenals. I am sure there are many Arsenal owners that do not use these and looking to sell it cheap.

Might just use the ten round mag and just put five in it. Thirty does seem a tad ridiculous. I really only intend to bring up one box of twenty soft point rounds, since I suspect they'll cost just a bit more than the wolf fmj I'm used to using.

All I have at home is Wolf FMJ and I would not use that!

when considering cartridges for hunting, keep in mind accuracy first.
no matter what the price, some of the ammo will shoot better in your
rifle, and some won't shoot worth a darn.

in my testing, Winchester SP showed good accuracy and good expansion
and penetration. Followed by Tula SP. I did not test Remington or
Federal as its my understanding that they are loading .308 bullets in
their cartriges, not .311.

suggestion: get some cartridges of each - and try them for accuracy
first. If the Remington or Federal SP's shoot more accurately in your
gun than the Winchester or Tula, then the choice is obvious.

Make sure that when you sight in your rifle with the hunting ammo you choose, that you only load the mag as you will when hunting. I don't know why this happened but I had an AR mag that would work fine when topped off and run dry but it wouldn't work right if I put in just a few rounds and loaded it. Perhaps I was doing something wrong. Maybe someone else can shed light on it. Also, make sure that it doesn't make any unacceptable noise with only 4 rds.

No matter what I'm using, I only load 3 rds when deer hunting. If there are two deer (and there are available tags), I can take them both. I don't like the idea of pounding off 5 shots like I hear people doing on the opener. Seems like people are taking deer wounding shots with rounds 3-5.

A box of this is what I just picked up at Scheels... for twenty bucks!

Well, my equipment is almost fully prepared. I ordered a rail/ scope/ rings combo that showed up on Saturday. It's the one from classic arms and is a Barska 3x9x40 huntmaster scope. Seems like a pretty solid setup for only about $70 after shipping.

Only bummer, I went to Gander Mtn (I know) and snagged some 1.25 inch Uncle Mikes sling swivels, only to find out when I got back that the ones installed in my Saiga are not compatible and I need to go back out and search out some "bases" or whatever the term is.

Good luck! I assume you also picked up an extra box of ammo or two to zero that scope and practice with the new setup? You might need to add a stock pad to compensate for the added height of the scope compared to the iron sights if you want to maintain a proper cheek weld/shooting position, assuming it's the same style my brother in law is using. Not trying to break your balls, just hoping to help you avoid a lesson in the field that could be avoided with some prep since you have a few days still. :)
