Buck/Doe Scent

Postby yukonjasper on Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:42 pm

Do you use it?
Which one?
How successful have you been?
Do you think it has made a difference?

I have used them both. Buck if the rut is on and Doe if I'm not sure or the rut is over.

I have had instances where Bucks have followed my trail when I have used a drag when I walk into my stand. I have also had Buck and Doe "appear" to be working up wind of a wick I've had out.

I only ask because those occassions I've had thoes experiences I can count on one hand and I've been deer hunting since 1980. Granted the first bunch of years I didn't use the stuff, but I have hunted with guys who have been successful- sometime more than I - and don't beleve in any of that stuff. These same guys will piss off there stand and not have a problem filling out year after year.

you can't cover your scent.

You'll be stinking to the next county just by walking in to the stand.

If you have a decoy out. Might help some. The few times I used it. Saw no difference.

hard to tell one way of the other. but i look at it this way,

if i'm investing a week of vacation, several hundred dollars in food/campsite/booze/licence/equipment/ammo/strippers PLUS 12 hrs worth of travel and all the other usual hassle that comes with deer camp, $15 for a buck bomb and a piss wick is pretty insignificant.

better question rather than does it help - CAN IT HURT???

(and that ladies and gentlemen, is the logic that makes people who market deer piss MILLIONS of dollars a year... :P )
i do what i can, where i'm needed, and i ask so little in return. i'm a true humanitarian fueled by rainbows and whiskey. you should be so lucky to know me...

pretty sure there are more deer hunters hooked in a year by a good marketing exec than there are deer harvested.

Considering, according to the DNR, that only 30% of hunters are successful: I have to agree with J on this one. :o

I use scent "minimizing" spray, and only hunt in clothes a day or two between washing (scent free regular detergent), and see more deer than when I try using "doe stink in a bottle" or products like it.

But I'm not some big name hunter, and my last ground hunt resulted in 4 deer walking past me at 15'... I probably don't have enough clout to chime in. ;)

After 30 yrs. of bow hunting I tend to agree with farmerj. But, there is one product that works every time, as soon as the deer get a whiff of it they stop and investigate, buck or doe, and thats pure fox urine. Pour it on your boots when you're about 30-40 yards from your stand and then walk in.
Never, never bring your boots into the house. ;)

I plan to eat enough venison sticks on the day before/of the opener that deer with think I'm just another buck in a tree.

You know... you are what you eat? Is that how it works?

Yes, this is my first year deer hunting. Why do you ask?

My buddy smokes in his stand and ground blind and has had just as much success as the rest of us. One year, the largest deer our group got was shot just 15 feet from where I took a dump the previous day.

For work we rent an outfitters lodge during the off season rather than live in a hotel, I was asking him about the scent thing and he said that it seems anything foreign to the area gets a buck curious. They want to know what's in their yard just like anyone else. He's had deer approach human urine almost as much as the deer in a bottle stuff.

I might try this. And what precisely did you eat in the previous 36 hours?

Most likely a Whoopie burger basket and Grain Belt beer the night before and cold cereal & coffee the morning of, and halloween candy the rest of the day. Good luck!

This theory might explain the success my now 94 year old uncle has had Elk hunting in Colorado. He eats Boiled Dinner almost exclusively - I suppose the sound could be interpreted as an Elk Bugle and the scent is a curiosity - maybe the Whitetails will fall for the same trick. He also used to find fresh Elk droppings and rub them all over himself to cover his scent. I went with him one year - we didn't find any Elk poop Thanks God.

Oh, I should add that I've been dripping sweat out in the woods numerous weekends over the summer, so the deer should start to recognize my personal "aroma." I have a feeling that's why only one of the 4 deer had her tail up when I screwed up and snagged a twig lifting my bow off the ground.

They haven't associated the smell of the atv and saws with a dinner bell yet, but I'm thinking it won't be long before they do.

Yep, take a whiz in a bucks scrape--it'll drive 'em nuts.
