Buck/Doe Scent

Discuss all of the great hunting opportunities in Minnesota

That is one advantage to the area we hunt. My cousin and his buddies are up there all the time and are always out in the fields with the wheelers, having beers and pissing everywhere, so the deer are used to human scent and activity in the area.

Unlike my place out west that I tried to hunt a few times. The place doesnt get a ton of traffic until pheasant and duck season. I've hunted the grove behind the house, setting up a stand to overlook the heavy trails coming in and out of that grove and have seen nothing. My theory is that because 95% of the year there is no one there, they use the area heavy, but when we show up in the fall, they get spooked with all the human and canine activity and smells and just go somewhere else until the actibity dies down.

As a result of this discussion, I've decided to piss all over my Hunting clothes and stop showering or using any TP. That should get me good and Raunchy for the hunt

Swifty - If your talking about Vivica Fox urine - although a little kinky - it may work on me also.

I always make a couple of mock scrapes and put Trails End #307 all over the mock scrape... didn't think it really worked until I saw a few deer actually remarking the fake scrape that I made, so it does work. Good luck!

Never used it, no idea if it helps.. we're moving around pushing/stalking most of the time so the beer-chili fart scent of man is the only olifactory aid we bring along. Last year I stood upwind in front of a soggy, smelly round-bale at first light with 5-day old hunting clothes on and 0 scent killers/aids and don't think the buck I shot had a clue I was there until the gun went bang.

You don't need buck urine to make a scrape - your piss will do just fine... It's like someone moving their chair: they get upset that their scrape has been defaced, or someone is in their spot.

About three shots mixed with some Yager usually works, as long as you drink it at least 18 hours before shooting hours.

I have read this before, so I tried it. There was a buck a few years ago on my property, a good 10 pointer that had a scrape under an apple tree. Had a couple pictures of him visiting, so one afternoon I pissed all over his scrape. A few days later when I checked back, the scrape was all tore up, much larger than original, must have made him mad that someone moved his chair.

I didn't use any this year. Wouldn't have mattered since the wind wouldn't stop blowing, so the scent woul have ended up pulling deer from Canada - they should be here by Thursday if they run.

I hope you guys had luck this weekend. We got blanked for the weekend but the crew shot 3 yesterday - of course I wasn't hunting yesterday - go figure.

Thanks for the posts and opinions.

For what it's worth.. on Sunday morning I headed out wearing clothes out of a stinky duffel bag, no shower (teeth brushed at least) wearing hip waders and packing in my usual change of clothes and gear in a pack. Nothing I have was treated with a scent block or attractant, etc... After hiking a mile through forest and another 500 meters across a swamp in hip waders working up a good sweat in the process I swapped into dry clothes, regular boots and proceeded to park myself on the ground under a tree in the pitch black (still persipring and not smelling any better after a previous day of hunting). This was before sunrise and before the wind really whipped up...

Anyway, a buck came within 25 feet of me and only then began stomping/snorting and (to the ammusement of my brother in law) pissing/marking a scrape on a nearby tree close enough to stink up the area real good. I think he finally caught on that someone was hanging out nearby when I unsnapped my hunting knife just in case he decided to try and gore me under the tree and then rapidly moved along... pretty much sealed my opinion that scent blocking sprays/gear are not really necessary if you know how to sit still and perhaps kick up some dirt/leaves before you sit down to mix up the local scents a bit.

I used to just wash stuff and then wear it all week...

I find that I'm getting closer to the animals regardless of the wind now that I'm actively controlling my stink. I had a fawn not 5 yards behind me down wind (and there was a breeze) who only raised the flag because I made noise moving my bow.

I think scent reduction is a valid tool in the arsenal, but it's certainly not the only thing that matters. Bow hunting makes for a different game - I shoot deer 5-8x farther away with a rifle than I'd even move on (draw, or attempt to get ready to shoot) with a bow. 40yds is max effective range for me with the pointy sticks. I'd shoot a deer at 300yds without thinking twice about it with my rifle.
