Tree stand recommendation? (climbing)

Postby solidgun on Mon Nov 07, 2011 5:48 pm

I have always hunted open lands at under 200 yd range targets. This year I wasn't going to go hunt, but I have been invited to go with someone.

Apparently, I need a tree stand and after hours of searching and reading, I decided to settle on a climbing type tree stand and don't really want to spend too much (around $100; max $150 before taxes). I have seen all the circulars and just browsed through the store displays and they don't seem all that great and very heavy. While weight is not an issue for this particular trip, I wanted to know if someone has something that will suit my need.

Something with a harness included would be great as I see that those are another $80 or so.

I will probably never get into bow hunting and this year I am switching to 26" barrel rifle. Not sure if this information helps.

Additional question:
What do people do to silence the stands? Tape? Spray on? Ones in the store were very noisy.

I used an API grand slam magnum. Wanna borrow a shorter rifle? A varmint cannon in a tree stand can be unwieldy ;) .

Keep an eye out for a used Summit. They can be quieted down with regular "great stuff" (use the low expanding type). The weight will become an issue if you have to hike it in like you do on most public land worth hunting. I was offered a steel climber for 20 bucks last year and chose to decline it to spend 250 on my summit viper ss. The new ones have the foam core already, and are only another hundred over your target price.

Dawson is right about the heavy barrel being a bit of a chore when your arse is planted in a fixed position. My cooper has a #2 profile 24" barrel and it's not an easy hold in a compromised position.

IIRC, all tree stands sold now are required to come with a harness. I know the ones we bought for FAS came with harnesses.

before I got a treestand, I'd consider a ladder stand. Just seems like a lot to try and learn/figure out during deer season.

Ladders are just easier to set up and you need something to get you up into the tree anyway. (yeah, I know you said climbing.)

This is the first year I used a ladder stand. We used three guys to get it set up. Do you have a system for doing it alone? Mine looks something like this except it has a blind surrounding it.

something similar to this is what I've used in the past. Easy to set up solo. At least my experience.

When I had my daughter start hunting, I went to a ground blind.

Just an update,

Sat in this thing all day today....very comfortable, quiet, solid construction.

I was considering Summit, but the models I was considering was not in stock last night and I needed it this morning.

Turkey season ended halloween. ;)

That gorilla stand looks nice. Let us know how you like it as you use it more. I think it looks like a better collapsing design than the summit, but summit's are very sturdy once assembled.

Summit Viper. It's a climbing stand. Save up and buy a good one. Quiet and light costs money.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Above the OP's price range, but
I like my Summit.
I have a Goliath.
It has a little more seat than the Viper, for when I was a little heavier. It's built for such, as well.

Since you bought it already this won't do you much good. A climbing stand will limit the trees you can use, possibly taking you out of the best spot to be. Whereas a hang-on with climbing sticks has more versatility.
