Minnesota wildlife officials are moving ahead with plans for a hunting and trapping season on the iconic timber wolf.

Today's announcement by the Department of Natural Resources that a November-to-January season is in the works follows last month's announcement by federal officials that they plan to remove federal protections from the animals, which have reached stable and healthy populations in the northern Midwest.

Barring any legal action to block the animal's de-listing, the DNR needs no further authority to open the predator to hunting and trapping. Officials said they do need state legislative approval for a number of aspects of their vision, such as a special wolf permit, and they plan to seek public input.

..snip...
Other specifics, such as what sorts of techniques - luring the animals with food or decoys, for example - had yet to be discussed, officials said.

Boggess and Stark said the decision to allow hunting was driven by a combination of factors, including the desire from hunters for the opportunity and the need to reduce conflicts with humans, especially livestock in some areas.

"It's a sustainable resource out there that can be harvested," Boggess said.

Landwehr said allowing the animal to be hunted and trapped should not be seen as a diminishment of its stature.

"This animal is a trophy animal...trophy from the standpoint that it is a worthwhile species and not vermin," he said.

I just hope a season can go off without any legal challenges to slow this process down. I would LOVE the opportunity to apply via lottery to take one.

Wonder how much a full body mount is gonna set me back if I get lucky 8-)

Alright, gotta wiegh in with my thoughts (biased since I aready own it!) .243 AR-10 platform. A bit more punch than your typical yote round since they are a bit heavier bodied, yet can still reach out and touch 'em. Shooting 58 Gr V max's for yotes currently, might think about upsizing a bit for wolfs.

Guys up north have been harvesting them for years with 30-06, 7mm, .243 - heck any gun a guy is currently using for deer.

I never have myself, but plenty of stories............I guess the trick is to gut shoot so they run for a long time before they die. Not really in favor of the method, but the population has overrun some areas and with it being illegal, you get shot placement that makes sure the wolf doesn't die on your land.............

It'll be interesting to see if it is handled like moose permits, one license by lottery for your lifetime.

I plan on using a Savage 1899 in 22 High Power if I have an opportunity to take one. It worked well for a great, great uncle so I see no reason why it shouldn't today. I did have to search for some older Speer bullets as the current Hornady bullets do not stabilize in the old rifles. I should imagine any 22 caliber centerfire that can handle the 64 gr and heavier bullets should work just as well. I would think the 22 caliber bullets meant for deer hunting such as the 60 gr Nosler Partition, 55 gr Bear Claw, and the various Barnes X Bullets should do just as well if not better.

If I have to reach out and touch a wolf beyond the capabilities of an iron sighted lever gun, then I think either my 6mm Rem with 100 gr bullets or one of the scoped 250 Savage rifles with 87-100 gr bullets will work just as well. the wolves I've seen appear to top out around 90 pounds or so, anything that will down a deer that size will work pretty well on a wolf.

Starting soon (I think next week), homeowners can pop wolves if they turn in the carcass and report it to law enforcement. Just heard it on the news.

The round you use isn't as important as dressing properly for the hunt.
