Sigh......
This post has totally gone off track. Seriously guys. Come on.
I dont understand why y'all are arguing a point that well.... is an opinion. I dont have it in my heart to do what some people are ok with. Thats just human nature is it not? Is it so hard to comprehend that a 30 yr old female who has rescued 2 horses and 7 cats in her lifetime does not have it in her heart to use live bait? I get upset if I see road kill. I get really upset when I see people throwing meat away as an animal has given it's life for your nutrients to survive. I value life regardless of the creature. No one should suffer.
So... I have a few points perse that I will stick to. Clean shots only. No questionable ones. I am shooting to lower the overpopulation problem. They are killing all the wildlife and there are too many of them to sustain a healthy balance. They are hungry and mangy and I don't want them to suffer. If I am able to thin the herd, hopefully other wildlife will come back and the coyotes can also have a better life.
I have a expensive electronic call and I am perfectly happy if that is sub-par to live bait. To be perfectly honest, even the electronic call is disturbing to me. That being said, F-ing deal with the fact that some people might not be ok with it regardless of it's effectivity.

NOW......... can we please move on?

How about this....
What caliber do most of you use? I have a 223, a 270 and a 17 at my disposal.
What time do you prefer to hunt? Dark of night, dusk, sunrise, midday?
Do you hunt without snow cover? If so, how do you see anything? If you got a spotlight, how fast can you locate the target and fire? I dont feel Im that fast.

if you hunt with a light, in MN it's shotgun only.

I use both a .223 M4gery and also a savage .243 bolt.

I don't hunt nearly as much as I should. I won't be able to get out until monday at the earliest.

How do you have the .243 set up? bipod? scope? none of the above?
uffda yeah by monday I bet our snow will be gone.
My dad lets me use his nightvision so the snow is pretty helpful and awesome with that.

I don't like bipods, prefer to shoot off bags.

Got a cheap illuminated mil-dot on it now.

Still need to bed the action though. Got a boyds laminated stock a couple years ago

Yes, I got off track when attacked for my situations and apologize for my "high-horse" comment to you. My situation was different than what your's is. Sorry.

I have used a 223, but a 243Win or 6mmRem is better for reaching out there. I reload so the Hornady 80 grain FMJ bullet is available to reduce damage to pelt. If killing with no desire for saving pelt, the 270Win with 100 grain bullets would be an efficent killer with major pelt damage occurring.

I hunted all times of day depending on activity, but had my best results when hunting at night on snow covered ground. If the moon is out at all, you can see better than in daytime, and coyote activity is greater. Fox too. If no snow cover, I used my 25-06Rem target rifle for long shots during daytime, early or late in day.

If using a light, use a red light, it won't bother your eyes so much ruining your nightvision, and won't burn their eyes as much resulting in the coyotes looking your way longer out of couriosity of type of light. Two hunters are required, one on light, one on gun, setup about 50 feet apart so night vision is retained on shooters. If radios are legal, keep it quiet. Learn to use a radios call feature to cause a coyote to stop and listen - you better be quick! Check legality of these actions before use.

Shotguns are very effective on coyotes if you can get close enough, speed of use comes with practice, as in any sport activity.

AND we are back on-topic.

It sounds like you have everything that you need. The biggest things to remember are wind and movement. If you have no experience, I would get a video. I would recommend Randy Anderson, Mastering the Art. It is one big advertisement for his calls, but he shows different hunts using different sounds. The only thing I can tell you is that practice is important to be successful.

Since a license is not required for hunting coyote would I be able to bring a friend who has not completed hunter safety training hunting? He's not too interested in hunting but he thinks coyote might be satisfying enough for him to try it. He is smart guy and I shoot with him regularly enough to know that so I'm not worried about him doing anything dumb.
