+1 to what Dean points out PLUS you could potentially have so much snow in the primary range that would make hunting difficult if not impossible.

One additional thought is that the wolf population may be closer to humans during and just after deer hunting due to easy dining options (cripples, gut piles etc), so that would increase your opportunities to harvest.

I certainly understand hunting wolves to eliminate the nuisance and for the fur. How about the meat? Is it any good?

I have read all the posts and find them very interesting. some knowable people posting. Over the years I have spent considerable time in the north woods, both hunting & enjoying other types of recreation. I have encountered a LOT of Wolf sign, but my sightings have been very limited, I can only recall two in which I may have had a shot. I am wondering what (in your opinion) would be the best way to hunt the wolf? I personally think it would be a difficult hunt, I Apologies if I missed any of this in the previous posts msn

I would think that calling them in is about your only chance. Like a yote but much more wary i would guess. Other than that I am thinking it is just luck.

No lie, I could have done this once. I was 15 feet up a tree in Little Falls during deer season when a doe came blazing past me as fast as she could go. About a minute later, 5 wolves came through the woods and stopped under my tree. They circled and sniffed my pack that I had left on the ground. One wolf put his front paws up on a downed tree and looked up right at me. Kind of creepy. They sniffed around for a minute and then headed out. Crazy stuff.

Did you get the urge to take a leak right about then? :)

I do believe I filled my Gatorade bottle soon after. The conundrum was how long to wait before climbing down. I had a mile hike to my truck through a swamp and didn't feel like doing it after dark.

The usual way to shoot wolves in Alaska is as an incidental sighting to another hunt. This is probably why they don't want to have wolf season open while firearms deer season is going on here.

Gut pile "baiting" is not real effective, but sometimes works.

I have heard some have tried the predator calling methods and heard variable success stories about it.

Trapping them is tricky, but the really good guys can do it fairly well.

As some have said, wolves are reasonably canny critters, and you are not dealing with 1-2 like with Coyotes, but a whole pack of them, and they will learn what to avoid when in a hurry. This will not be all bad, as they will then tend to avoid people more than they do now, but it won't do much to boost deer/moose populations.

The most successful way to hunt wolves is from an airplane, which is illegal.

This is a revenue generating crock of dung!

I don't want more gun seasons screwing up the late archery deer season unless they want to extend it accordingly (like 2 more months to make up for the time after gun and ML when the deer are nocturnal from all the pressure).
