Nice Doe! Makes me hungry. I made it out last Friday morning and Sunday evening for the first hunts of the year. Friday I had a mama doe and her yearling in my food plot 30 yards away, then Sunday evening I called in 2 noisey fawns in a different spot. Then a half hour later had a different mama doe and fawn come through, and a while after that a 2 year old fork buck, that left something to be desiered, came within range. I'm not in a management area down here in southern MN, so I spend a lot of time passing up delicious meat. Waiting for Bamby's Dad to come around!

Got this guy in ND Sept. 1st. Got the hunt on video too. I started a thread for it called hunt video or something like that if you want to see.

Looking to get in the woods in MN this weekend. Taking my 3 and 5 year old for a "stand" tonight. Will see how it gos. Hard to keep the kids quiet. More for fun than real hunting.

Our first good cold front moves through, and it's too damn windy to bow hunt. :x

Windy is good isn't it? Know where your scents going, and the extra movement helps conceal your movement. I don't mind. Any day hunting is better than a good day at work!

Windy with stick and string = high probability of missing.

Deer are also more easily spooked when it's windy.

Seems like I never see deer when it's really windy. I think they hunker down because they can't trust their nose or ears. YMMV.

Opening rifle is the only time where wind and temperature really don't matter in heavily hunted areas. Hunters spook the deer and they will wander on to the next lot, regardless of the weather. Hopefully you are in a tree waiting. I try to be the first one in, that way I am already waiting with much anticipation when the clock strikes legal. Two years ago on Saturday and Sunday I got deer within minutes after the opening bell. Makes for an easy rest of the day, and my feet are never cold, even hours after getting one on the ground.

Bow season, well that is another matter. First year I shot a 10 pointer, 20 yards broadside. Smoked the lungs and heart. I thought man this bowhunting is easy and I was not freezing too. Well that just happens to be the last deer I got with my bow. Four years ago! Three years ago I passed on a decent 6 early on and never saw another deer the rest of bow season or during rifle season.

My if it's brown, it's down philosophy has been re-enacted. I need my meat!! Antler's in no way replace tenderloin, backstraps or jerky. I love tender vittles! The spike bucks taste the best - we call the management bucks. Freezer management that is!

I got this fine specimen of summer sausage last weekend. We're on the way up North again to find her big brother.
